I have just lost 23 pounds by eating sensibly, and have another 14 to lose. I am starting to think about toning my flabby bits, but just read an article that strongly suggests that toning exercises such as sit ups etc just don't work. Is this true?

From my experience, toning exercise isn't just confined to sit ups, crunches, squats and the lot.

It's a whole lot more than that - you've to do cardio exercise, strength-training and stretching together with toning exercise, in order to:

1. Rev up your heart rate and metabolism, to burn off excess body fat, to reduce your body fat percentage - this is the work of cardio exercise

2. Toning exercise for all major muscle groups - strength-train with weights or use your own bodyweight, to build muscles, to strengthen and define the muscles

3. Stretching to build flexibility into your muscles and body

The fat-burning session thru cardio will melt away the fat that's covering your muscles, revealing the muscles that you've toned and strengthened.

So, do toning exercise as a package per above, then you'll see and experience good results.

Don't just do toning exercise on specific spots; it won't work because there's no so-called "spot-reduction" where you target just one spot in your body to tone and hope to reduce it in size.

no...technically "toning" is nothing more than increasing definition in the muscles and this ONLY comes from a decrease in the body fat, it's basically semantics. toning, losing body fat, increasing definition are all the exact same thing. you can't spot reduce fat so in that aspect "toning" exercise for specific body parts are total bs.

Toning exercises do just that. They tone your muscles. They turn your muscles into leaner, slimmer muscle mass. They increased muscle increases your metabolism, therefore burning more calories. Whether they provide weight loss benfits or not, they will reshape your body and strengthen your muscles.

You read one article that said they don't work. Try reading one of the hundreds that say they do. Everyone has an opinion, many of them completely nuts. They only way to know if they work is to try them.

yes, toning exercise does work. When you tone specific areas, such as arms, thighs etc., it builds muscle. Anytime you build muscle it burns fat. So that is where the toning exercises come into effect.

They definitley work - I've only lost 5lb so far on my new fitness and diet regime, but I've lost 3 inches on my waist and 1.5 inches on each thigh because I have started exercising 5 days a week for at least 30 mins each time. Others in my spinning class, which I go to twice a week, have had the same results.
