Does this not say that parents should kill their own children if they disobey?

From Deuteronomy

21:18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them

21:19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

21:20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

Wow all I see are excuses and no Christians directly answering the questions. I asked is the type of morality you would teach your sons or daughters?

some say the OT doesn't apply anymore

others say some of it applies, but not all of it

and still others say all of it still applies....

it's hard to get them to agree here....

Yes, the Bible states a number of things like this because the Bible was written by ignorant, savage men. They believed that you should kill anyone that does not comply. In fact, there are passages that say that you should kill people that won't convert, including their wives and children. There are also passages that say you should rip open a woman if she is pregnant to kill the child inside too. Funny how Christians are so upset about abortion when it's clearly mentioned in this case. Also, you're supposed to take the young girls as your trophies and destroy whole villages if they are non-Christian. Yes, the Bible is a pretty ****** up thing to try to raise your kids on. And to think that these people are always saying that God, the Bible and praying are needed to have a good household and society. The book is nothing but gruesome demands of murder, rape and slavery. Honestly, I don't understand why your list is so small. :-)

No, because as a Bible reader, I know the laws you mention were for national Israel. We do not abide by the civil laws held to the nation of Israel in its theocracy. We render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's.

The law has 3 applications: civil, ceremonial, and moral. The first two have passed away (due to fulfillment) with the coming of Christ and the institution of the church. The final 3rd use of the law still is in effect, which is why the 10 commandments are still valid. We can glean the moral aspects from the OT, but we are not bound by the civil implications.

Disrespect for one’s parents was a most serious offense under the Mosaic Law. (Exodus 21:15, 17) “In case there should be any man who calls down evil upon his father and his mother,” stated the Law, “he should be put to death without fail.” (Leviticus 20:9) Rebellion against one’s parents was tantamount to rebellion against God himself.

Emphasis on Mosaic Law. We are no longer under the Mosaic Law.

Pretty cut and dry ain't it? The Israelites were a hardheaded people. They needed guidance from above. The kind that got their attention. Can you think of anyone right now who could use some good guidance? Jesus did NOT remove the mosaic laws. They are all useful today as were in those days.
What he did was cease the animal sacrifice or blood sacrifice stuff. Jesus never meant for you to believe in him and cut out the old testament. Jesus quite often quoted from it. The Jewish priests of Jesus day were not teaching the things of God. They were only thinking of themselves. The people needed real guidance. The things of the entire Bible are as relevant today as they were in Noah's day. I thank God my father took the time to put a leather belt on my bottom for most of my youthful life. I didn't have to get reproved very often after a few of those. Today's youth are rampantly godless,selfish,spoiled brats!

You forgot the flip side to that argument. Parents are responsible for ALL their children's actions. Before a child comes of age the parents are the ones responsible for if their child steals, hurts or kills. If both of these traditions were still in place family value issues would be obsolete. Instead we have no value to the family any more.

YES - that is absolutely the morality I teach my son and daughter.

If you read your Bible, you would understand that lots of physical things in the OT are allegories for spiritual things.

These are all sins. They all lead to death and Hell.

The purpose of the law is to let us know that we sinned and deserve to die and go to Hell if we break the law.

Romans 3:20 because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for through the law cometh the knowledge of sin.

No - we don't kill our sons and daughters. We live by grace now. Jesus has fulfilled the law. That's called the gospel - or good news. I bet kids think its' great news!

Romans 8:1-3 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don't walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. (3) For what the law couldn't do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh;

Remember that in those days there was no such thing as jail, and also that extreme disorderly behavior could endanger the entire community. The death penalty would be the maximum penalty, not always imposed, depending on circumstances.
