Ok so my son had his orientation today for JK, he wasn't allowed to start in September because of a hearing and speech delay.(he was approved to go for half days, rather than full days like the other kids) Well his school is over 1km from our home and i don't drive and my son had a very terrible time walking it today saying he was tired and he couldn't do it. I'm 6months pregnant and carrying him isn't always gonna be an option. I shouldn't have been doing it today.
My hubby works so he can't drive us and most of my neighbours work so they can't drive us either.
Should i just force him to walk it? He even layed down on the ground and said he was tired and his legs hurt.
I would take his stroller but i don't want the other kids to think he is a baby and laugh at him and i really don't wanna push a stroller around for 2hrs until he gets out of school.
Does anyone have any suggestions? or should i just force him to walk it and no he doesn't have a bike or scooter or anything.
Help!!

i am not saying for him to walk ALONE that would be insane but the distance to the school is 1.8km and he has a rough time walking it. He just complains his legs hurt and he is tired. And kids can take the school bus but only once they are in grade 1 and he is only just entering JK so he doesn't qualify for bus service.

Hun he might really be tired to walk, how old is he? and maybe you can try and tell him if he walks to school for a whole week you might give him a surprise if he keeps it up ...not the best answer but worked for my niece :) or tell dad to take him on the truck with him j/k

Talk to the school. They should have special buses for his grade.

I wouldn't suggest you walking that much... either. >.>

Not outside in one direction,.. yesh.

I wouldn't want him walking alone that much either.

If you have to stay at the school all day and nag the other mothers. It should be appearent you are prgenant so they should atleast take YOU home. Explain the situation.. they will think you are nuts for thinking you will walk that much outside in your pregnancy. Some of them probably couldn't even make it to their fridge at some point in their pregnancy.

Maybe they can Car Pool with your son.

Added:
1.8 km = 1.11846 mi.
OR 1 mi. and 208.503 yrd
There are 3 feet in a Yard

A Foot is considered the length of a tall man's foot.

So you are asking him to walk over 600 Large Man Feet, which is about 600 steps for a child, maybe 1.5x a step for him. If that is true then you are asking him to take 900 of his steps through whatever weather is thrown at you.

I would not want you walking 1,200 feet twice a day outside.

Sorry, but I thought you were considering letting him walk alone.

You really should physically go there and wait around for the parents to show up,.. then explain your situation and see if any can Car Pool him to and from school. 5 extra minutes on a drive can some times be farther then you would think.

I remember well haveing a Step Father dragging me because he was dumb enough to think a 6 year old could walk the same speed and distance as a 6-foot-something man. This was how long ago? And I still remember it!

Your son will also be prone to nodding off during the school day and likely have "Charley Horses" at night. This is something some pregnant women go through as well as children.. suddenly in your sleep your leg muscles creep up and tighten, then they get stuck. It's agony,.. I get the same problem when I have fish. As a result you are woken up by pain, can't go to the bathroom if you are a child and may spend the entire night awake and crying. Then the next day,.. you might just fall asleep in class and refuse to stay awake. You are a total grouch because your sore and tired and may not have even been able to walk to school on your own.

Do not be surprized if tomorrow he absolutely cannot walk to school and you can't seem to get him to go to sleep at night.

If you absolutely cannot transport him, then hold off until school will transport him.

The farthest I could handle when I was his age was probably .4 a Kilometer. You also get bored if you aren't chatting it up with another person your age and start wandering off and makeing plans to sneek off and investigate things when people need breaks or aren't paying attention.

My kids are now 5 and 7 and I take them on short hikes with me at times. Considering that, I don't think a 1km walk seems that far as long as someone is with him. It's good exercise!

We used to have a red wagon and it can be very handy to use it at times when kids don't want to walk. It's a good transition between a stroller and walking longer distances.

Is there anyway you can get a car? What are you going to do with a newborn and a toddler when you have to walk in the snow to school? He shouldn't have to walk that far. How long does it take to walk that far? That's insane. My only suggestion is to get a car or make your hubby change shifts at work so he can drive your son to and from school.

Your son is too young to walk alone to school.
You're not going to be able to continue walking with him for long.
If you have the option of putting off school for one more year, you should probably do so.
No sense in traumatizing the child about a two-hour session at school.
Next year, start looking for a ride to school for him way before the time to start.
In this day and age, I wouldn't let my child walk to school.
Good luck.

In my opinion, you should wait. It sounds like he could benefit from a little more time at home, working on his speech with you and so on. I assume JK is like a pre-kindergarten program? That it's not a requirement? On top of all that, you're pregnant. You don't need the stress and neither does your son. I think you should just relax and try to enjoy these last few months before the new baby comes. Good luck to you.

Is there no school bus? My son has modified days and the school provides transportation. If that isn't an option I would say stroller or maybe get a wagon it is more appropriate for older youngsters. Good luck to you and your son.

what about the bus

all schools have a bus call the school and find out of your bus is on the route, hes too young to bike to school alone .

find out about a bus or find out from the school where kids are in your neighbor hood and see about a car pool,

i know your plight i have a 4 year old and dont drive. so he rides the bus and loves it

If hes going to throw a fit like that because he doesnt want to walk I would take the stroller. after the first day if he gets laughed at he wont use it again! Make things easier on you. dont give in!

My kids love to go for walks. we make it really fun by looking at different trees and flowers. It won't hurt him to take the walk and is even good for him. I think kids do better if they get there heart rate up before school. It must be hard for you with the new baby coming. I wish you luck.
