A British primary school teacher has been arrested in Sudan, accused of insulting Islam's Prophet by letting her class of 7-year-olds name a teddy bear Mohammed, her school said on Monday.

Police arrested Gillian Gibbons, 54 of Liverpool, on Sunday at her home inside the Unity High School premises after a number of parents complained to Sudan's Ministry of Education, said Unity director Robert Boulos.

Gibbons could be sentenced to 40 lashes, six months in prison or a fine, said Ghazi Suleiman, the head of the Sudan Human Rights Group.

Boulos said he had decided to close down the school until January for fear of reprisals in Sudan's predominantly Muslim capital.

Unity, an independent school founded in 1902, is governed by a board representing major Christian denominations in Sudan, but teaches both Christians and Muslims aged 4 to 18.

It used to happen that almost muslim have twisted upbringing about islam they use only to pray without reading their Quran meaning their literacy is very low and dangerous, narrow mindedness and inconsiderate. One simple mistake they will make it fire. As I have read your statement "teddy bear mohammed" the teacher uttered it unintentionally, an honest mistake - a broad minded muslim could just reprimand him by telling the teacher that it is not allowed in islam or giving him a reminder that using the name Mohammed in an object is not allowed. What a very poor teacher. I'm so sorry to him he was punished by foolish mentality.

It was just an honest mistake. Let us be broad minded people, such happened to this teacher let us not make it big.
Ridiculous!!!! ---- Let them study their Quran that they may become a good fellow to others.

Perhaps because in the Old Testament the Christian God assumed the form of 2 bears and mauled a group of children for teasing a bald headed man (see 2 Kings). Given the Christian context of bears it would therefore be blasphemy for a Muslim if Mohammed was applied to a bear.

Just reading some of the other answers - is Burning The Teddy Mohammed a good idea???? what kind of message would that give....

Note to Muslims: hatred only breeds hatred, and intolerance only breeds intolerance - the ball is in your court - once Christians fully understand the message of Jesus and work out that you can still kill someone even though you have forgiven them, retaliation for irrational situations (such as this) will be quite nasty...

Aren't loads of Middle Eastern men and boys named Mohammed? That is probably why the children chose that name. Children love teddy bears so they gave it a name they love. If my child named a beloved toy Jesus because he loves both the name of Jesus and he loves his toy I would not be offended. It's not like they named a living pig or dog Mohammed. I think I'll go adopt a puppy and name him Mohammed, you-all feel free to do the same with a potbelly pig!

I imagine the teacher allowed the children to call the teddy bear Mohammad without malice. She perhaps didnt know that such a gesture would offend anyone. She'd have to be crazy to do something that she knew would offend Muslims.
Muslims are so sensitive. They must be very very scared people! More scared even than christians - and that's going some!

Calling a toy which represent an animal (bear) Muhammad make the Muslim prophet an animal too.

The more I hear and see about muslims and islam the more contempt grows inside me for them.

It seems that some Muslims are very insecure about their beliefs. I mean come on! Getting bent out of shape over this? Muslims may as well admit to the world that they have no self esteem!

This is on the BBC website if you don't believe it. The children got to vote on the bear's name, and THEY are the ones who picked Mohammed, because it is a popular, common name in their culture.
