God is Purity beyond that which we can obtain or even imagine. Cleanliness implies the lack of impurities so that is the reason for the statement.
Hope that helps.

I see what you mean about peace and love. Those could fit as well. This saying is something that mothers have always needed to help children understand they need to be clean, pick up their rooms, etc. That is just my opinion, but it is also can be a sign that you are well ordered inside too. You home is psychologically felt as children as something that directly effects how you feel about yourself and the world. If it is an abusive home, your world is split. If you are happy at home, that child will have a much better chance in growing up into a stable lifestyle and happiness. And when you're child is happy and has an ordered lifestyle (outside of the extremes, of course) you have a better chance at seeing God as loving and good and even a friend. When the world for a child makes sense, the world that God makes sense and so does God. God is kind and loving that way. How a child encounters the world is a prism as how he/she feels toward God and neighbor.
To me with psychology and spirituality togather, the statement makes sense.

Actually, according to the Rabbi that wrote it, cleanliness is a step towards it.
Rabbi Phinehas ben Yair (as attributed by Dr. A. S. Bettelheim):
"The doctrines of religion are resolved into carefulness; carefulness into vigorousness; vigorousness into guiltlessness; guiltlessness into abstemiousness; abstemiousness into cleanliness; cleanliness into godliness."

God IS perfection and cleanliness is closer to perfection than filth.
God IS love, so it is a given that love and peace are next to Godliness.

Quote the kjv Bible not Jewish fables then :)
1Ti 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

God has many attributes, like peace and love as well. Is "cleanliness next to Godliness" a Bible quote? Use your literary skills to create a new quote, if you are so inclined.

I wouldn't call cutting the neck of a lamb cleanliness, or being covered in the blood of Jesus, but thats just my personal interpretation of cleanliness.

God hates to step on sh-t...!!!
Deuteronomy 23:13-14 (NIV) As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. For the Lord your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.
So be clean...!!!

When i clean, I get a sense of humility. Christ was very humble. That's one way to answer it. A clean house is healthy for us and God wants us to take care of ourselves so we can continue to do his will. It is best to have a clean home when guests come over so they too can enjoy a clean healthy environment. One of the most important things God wants us to do is to love one another.
