My older daughter had grommets inserted 3 times when she was little. It was a simple operation and she had to spend one night in the hospital each time.

The operation is performed under a general anaesthetic. After cleaning the ear, doctors make a small cut and place the grommet in the ear drum. This immediately relieves pressure on the ear and allows fluid to drain back through the nasal passage. In twelve months, the grommet is expected to work itself out naturally, but they may fall out earlier or later.

This website explains it all. My son had two sets put in when he was younger. The only thing that was hard is keeping the ears dry when bathing. Other than that he did fine. Good luck!
