I really hope someone can help me!! I've been living in the UK for 2.5 years and have decided to move back home to Cape Town, South Africa. I need to send my excess luggage (50kg) with an airfreight company. My questions is: How do you customs clear personal affects? Is it difficult? Can I do it on my own?
Thanks!!

The air freight Company will handle that part of it for you. From the UK to SA is a non smuggling route so you should not have any problems. They clear packages like this all the time with no problems. Make sure that the shipper has instructions to deliver to your door and check with them about the particulars before shipping. No worries mate!

Edit: also make sure you have an accurate packing list with everything written down. 5 copies, 1 for the shipper, 1 for the outside of the box and one for the inside of the box. 2 for you one that you carry with you and one for your files. Estimate the value of your goods low. it will help.

I can't say what the customs regulations are for South Africa, but normally it's more about their customs department collecting any duty on goods that are subject to tariiffs as well as the importation prohibited goods. I live overseas, and depending on the shipment, I have had to provide copies of my passport in able to clear customs as well as pay duty on the shipment before I was able to receive the goods, on small shipments I have had to pay duty to the shipper on arrival at my home. The shipper should guide you through the process, but be careful what you estimate the value of your shipment is, as that will often determine any duty you may have to pay.
