Jim is right.
You and your Dad need to talk to your insurance agent.
I have two teenage sons, both drive, I insure all the cars under my policy as I get a cut rate for multiple cars, and the insurance comes out cheaper doing it this way. The boys are listed as drivers for their specific vehicles only, so they can't drive my car, nor can they drive each others cars, however, I can drive all three (it is good to be the King!!). The boys pay their share of the insurance and all is well. All the vehicles are titled in my name until they are legal age.
It also depends on the state you live in too.

Unless you can pay for your own insurance, keep it under his name- he can get your name added to it so that YOU are insured, but the car will ultimately be under his name- which is ideal for a teenager..if you are old enough, you should have no problem having your own insurance unless ofcourse of financial issues. Just talk to his insurance representative

I would suggest that your dad have a talk with your insurance agent
situations like that is best to put cards on table with ins co in case you do have trouble and later find that you are not cover by some fine print in the policy

KEEPING IN HIS NAME WILL REDUCE THE YOUR INSURANCE RATES BUT AT THE SAME TIME INCREASE THE TOTAL RATES.
