My friend says that lifting heavy weights (almost maxing out) for sets of 3-5 reps regularly is the most effective way to build muscle. Is this true?

Does high weight/low reps build muscle? yes, but it's surely not optimum for stimulating hypertrophy. ultimately the diet determines the rate of the increase in muscle mass but that's another topic.

for maximum stimulation of hypertrophy in skeletal muscle you need to use loads close to 80% of your one repetition maximum and use a time under tension (TUT) of 45-60 seconds. so basically each set should take between 45-60 seconds to complete and should be from 8-10 reps. you would want to take about 60-90 seconds rest between sets. when you can hit all of your goal reps on the last set while keeping proper form it's time to increase the working load by 10%.

It can also be genetics too. U is also certainly lean which I feel is truthfully larger. Stick to eight reps with heavy weights for a month then for two weeks do 15 reps with mild weights and swith again to eight reps and heavy weights. Dont overlook ur proteins
