I have recently adopted a 2 year old female staffordshire bull terrier. She came with all her jab papers but no papers to prove her pedigree or anything to hint at her parentage.

1. Is there any way of having her tested/examined to prove her pedigree?
2. If so, would I be able get a certificate or get her registered with the kennel club as a pedigree dog?

I've had cross breeds before but never a pure breed so haven't got a clue what pedigrees are all about, and I'd like her to have one litter.
Any advice is welcomed and I live in the UK.

Just to clarify, I adopted her as a family pet, but i was told that a purbreed should have at least one litter, I did say I'm new to this!!

Even a pure breed should not have a litter unless it is KC registered and has done very well in shows. There are hundreds of Staffys in shelters and having a litter puts your dog at risk of severe harm or even death.

There is no way to get her KC registered. This is done when the puppy is born and at the moment there is no way of knowing the parentage unless you are provided with a pedigree when you buy them.

This is how it works. Two papered dogs get together. The female has the litter and the litter is registered with the AKC or the UKC or CKC, wherever it is born.

You have a few problems here!
1. Since you don't know who the parents are, there is NO WAY to figure out if you could claim purebred status through DNA tests to prove that it is the offspring of two purebred dogs.
2. Since you don't know who the parents are, you have no way to know if the litter was registered.
3. There is no way to register her as a purebred in any KC without the purebred status and a pedigree to back it up.

Sorry!

And then, because your dog is NOT a true purebred (at least, she may look like one, but there is no way to truly know), she should not be bred, and any owner of a responsible stud will not allow it. I think the best bet is to treat her like your crossbred dogs and get her spayed to live a long, happy life with her :)

I had this exact same problem, purchased a 'pedigree' dog for no other purpose than for a pet, but still paid the price for a pedigree so wanted to check the line to see what the lineage was, on investigating the pedigree it turned out to be a fake and unfortunatley the is NO WAY of finding out anything about the bloodlines or registering the dog with the KC as a pedigree. I know how frustrating this is, sorry...

As said above, you need the pedigree papers from the original breeder. There are some puppy farm breeders who register dogs with some sort of phoney association not the Kennel Club. No papers no proof of pedigree. I rehome ex show Beagles and have had mine spayed as they have had the KC limit of litters. I have just rehomed one that is under the litter limit but will get her spayed soon. Some breeders who have rehomed older bitches will not give papers as they do not want them bred from. As mentioned above you can save the female dog from going through the pain of various "lady" cancers later in life.

Pedigrees are not that different from crossbreeds the only difference is that they are maybe not a hardy.

There are already too many dogs.

Not only can you not prove she's purebred, you certainly can't prove she comes from decent lines.

NO kennel club will register a dog without a pedigree.

If you adopted her, I would think your goal would be to provide her with a happy life, not turn her into a breeding machine. Why would you want to risk her life and health for the sake of further overpopulating the animal shelters? There is NO reason other than your own greed to breed that dog. Spay her and let her be

EDIT: Whoever told you a dog should have 'just one litter' was a moron. NO dog needs to have any litters, period.

first contact the kennel club to see if she is already registered. I dont think you can register them later as you would need to know the dogs parentage to complete a pedigree certificate.
Its nonsense that pedigree dogs have to have one litter. You need to know more about the dog you have before you start to think about breeding.

Hi i am uncertain as to this , i thin k unfortunately you will be unable to ascertain her pedigree as papers are normally given by breeders which means they are a k.c registered breeder and can show you where your dog has come from her family tree. However as she is a pure breed you can join your breed club. the best place to get accurate information on the question you asked is from your breed club is at a breed club please http;//www.letsgowalkies.net/ visit the links section and your breed club should appear there if not please visit the kennel club

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are among the most commonly euthanized dogs in the world, simply because they "look" intimidating.

Your best bet would be to spay your dog. If you're interested in raising a litter of puppies, why not foster a pregnant dog instead?

Probably not, you would need a her KC name or the sire or dams KC name to be able to trace her pedigree, thats IF she even has one.....the only way you would be able to do it is by knowing who bred her or asking the previous owners for her kennel name,

as for breeding her, it isnt just as easy as finding a stud and mating her, what you gonna do if she dies during the birth ? or if pups come out dying? its expensive to breed a dog the right way vet bills welping boxes food welpi for extra feeds time and effort.

I think you need to look into alot further!

If you have NO idea about her parentage, there is no way to know her pedigree....whcih is just a family tree for the dog. You cannot register the dog and you should spay her.
