hello!
first of all, give us some other details...how is the cough? it appears mostly at night? have you noticed the association with sweat? Is it dry or with expectoration? If so, what's the aspect of the sputum? I don't know what to say about your doctor's opinion, but I don't quite agree, even I'm just a med student. No viral infection keeps that long. Or, at least, no MINOR one. Even if it's viral, it's not normal just to let it be. Anyway, don't give the baby any antibiotics until some serios doctor sees him. If the sputum is greenish or lime-color, or if it's reddish just like leaves in the fall, go NOW to the ER. It can be something minor, but it can also be something bad. Take a blood sample and a chest X-ray, maybe some bacterial sample from the sputum, if there is any sputum. Better be sure it's nothing than wait and get worse. Good luck!

Has he got asthma? Coughing like that is usually a sign of asthma.
My friends two sons, my friend and one of my kids also have coughs. Doctor said it is a viral infection as well. All the coughing has brought on headaches, stomachaches, throwing-up, not wanting to eat, and always tired, because none of them can sleep due to the coughing.
Don't give you child anything sweet, like diluted pop, fizzy pop, sweets, cakes, chocolates, biscuits etc...... (the sweet things aggravate the cough, and will encourage more phlegm.
Plenty of water, calpol, and try and get him to eat. See if you can get him to suck on a strepsil.
Do you find if he moves around more he coughs more? And he coughs a lot at night? Is he wheezing?
my friend, her kids and my son, all have the same symptoms, they find it difficult to sleep, eat, drink, rest. What my friend and I are doing is what I have mentioned above. But then the kids are older than yours, the youngest here is 13. I have been giving my 15 year old paracetamol, and lemsips, and making him sit still or lie down as much as possible.
My friends son has started vomiting now, he's been off school 4 weeks with it so far.

The only cough medicine which seems to help my 7 year old is Delsyum the orange flavor is also very helpful. for a home remedy - which also works, heat some olive oil, roast some garlic and then mash it up and eat it, it is not as bad as it sounds, but it really works. Good luck. Perhaps you might want to consider a second opinion from another dr. Your son may be developing pneumonia.

Well, there is a viral infection going around. My kids just got over it. It can take up to 8 weeks to get rid of it. I used Mucinex for children and it works wonders! It will make all the yucky stuff come up. Maybe try Triaminic cough strips, the nighttime formula. It will help him sleep. Good luck and I hope your little one feels better soon!!

Being a father also having had a cough myself I find that sometimes a cough brings about swelling to the air passage and therein brings about a secondary reason for coughing if you use a coolant eg ice cream to reduce swelling and ease throat inflammation and in turn breathing relief
I find syrups do not easing throat inflammation

I would take him to a different doctor.
I just went threw this with my 5 year old with the same results--it's a "viral thing".
I took her to a different doctor on the 12th, they took blood, to do a blood count, and then took a chest x-ray and it turned out she had pneumonia!
