KHARTOUM (Reuters) - A British primary school teacher has been arrested in Sudan, accused of insulting Islam's Prophet by letting her class of 7-year-olds name a teddy bear Mohammed, her school said on Monday

Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, aged 54 from Liverpool, told Reuters they feared for her safety after receiving reports that young men had already started gathering outside the Khartoum police station where she was being held.

Teachers at Unity High School in central Khartoum said Gibbons made an innocent mistake and simply let her pupils choose their favourite name for the toy as part of a school project.

Police arrested Gibbons on Sunday at her home inside the school premises, said Unity director Robert Boulos, after a number of parents made a complaint to Sudan's Ministry of Education.

Boulos said she had since been charged with "blasphemy", an offence he said was punishable with up to three months in prison

NO, is the answer to your question and a string of suicide bombs and screaming demonstrations about things as trivial as cartoons show the danger clearly.

My concern is that we have this level of fanaticism in the UK now and in big numbers.

I have a Christian friend from Egypt. She was born and raised there, and, she didn't wear her crosses on the outside of her clothing or do anything showing her to be overtly Christian. She married a man that was studying in the monestarie and they moved here to the USA a few years ago. She said it simply wasn't something to run up and down the streets yelling or "showing off", but, that she felt safe otherwise. She didn't know of anyone personally being harmed by their beliefs.

i hope she is safe. Many muslims tell me that islam is a peaceful religion, i hope they are also forgiving, as this teacher made a very innocent mistake. She was teaching the children a voting exercise where they got to choose the name of a teddy bear, i cant understand how they can interpret this as blasphemy.

OK here, after reviewing every 1's answers, I got conclusion. Actually "HATE" or "DISCRIMINATION" is a main conflict among many religons. I am a muslim myself, and I appologize for some stupid people who says that they are muslims, but they dont behave like Muslims. A true Muslim is one who "LOVE" everybody, and dont want to do something which could've bad effect on others. Even Islam dont want Muslims to beatup donkies or other animals. So, Muslims are really nice, however, Christians are very similar to Muslims, but some of there beliefs are different, which is fine. Everybody has a rigt to believe or practie whatever religion they want.

So in MUSLIM countries, punsishments r really strict, and there is alots of JUSTICE there. As question's details says that the teacher abused Prophet Muhammad, she would be killed or emigrated back to her country, because even me could'nt tolerate this. You know It is human-nature.

SO, In addition, I would say that respect every religon, and stay closer, and that is what my religon ISLAM says. NO TERRORISM allowd in Islam.

Not very. It depends on which country but there are whole books of reports of summary executions, false arrests, discrimination etc of christians in Islamic countries. A quick internet search will show up the latest news items. Also check http://www.opendoorsuk.org/wwl_profiles/intro.php .
If you're a christian and you go make sure people are praying for you, and remember God loves everyone, even people who don't respect human rights!

It would have to depend on the country. Most Muslim countries will not allow you to have a Christian Service of any kind. It happens and often they are aware of it but if it becomes public knowledge they will jail anybody even suspected to be involved. Most Muslim countries do have groups that are Christians and live in a certain region of the country.

it's impossible to answer your question, because you didn't specify which country. Obviously they are all different.

Most self proclaimed muslim countries have a substantial christian population as well....including Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Palestine, and of course...Sudan. Many holy places throughout the middle east are worshipped by Christians and Muslims.... like the wailing wall.

I think as far as safety is concerned... I don't think that just being a Christian would make you unsafe.... but if your an American, I think your safety could be in jeopordy regardless of your religion.

I feel very sorry for her finding herself in this terrible situation, but don't you think she should have learned more about the application of the religious beliefs before she went? Its obviously considered to be blasphemous, a Christian would think that also if calling a teddy Jesus, but their reaction would be different, many would still complain to the school

Hate to hear myself saying this as I don't want to appear bigoted or prejudiced but who is safe in many Islamic countries no matter what they are. Saudi Arabia gave Idi Amin sanctuary so I guess he was.
Ps. feeling bad about what I wrote now so I'll say sorry to all good Muslims out there, after all wherever fundamentalists of all creeds can thrive there will be trouble.
