Being from the south.(Tennessee)..I would probably say a good meal that represents this region could include fried chicken, mashed potatoes(with gravy), green beans(or any two vegetables), maccaroni and cheese of course..maybe some cole slaw..buscuits..all from scratch of course! Iced tea to drink and a freshly baked apple pie for dessert topped with vanilla bean ice cream. Of course most people think of buscuits and gravy, grits, eggs and bacon or sausage for a southern breakfast meal. I only eat these meals occasionally now but it's the kind of meals that lots of people from the south were raised on and just about any restaurant in this area will have these items on the menu. By the way this is a very interesting question..I really look forward to reading all the answers..thanks! and hope this helps..p.s. can't forget the pinto beans and fried potatoes and corn bread!

Southern fried chicken with a nicely seasoned crisp crust, served with a few complimentary side dishes. These would most likely include an iron skillet full of delicious cornbread made with a wonderfully light texture, slightly sweet with a dark crisp crust. Next would be a large pot of seasoned turnip greens, usually those that came from the garden. These would be served with some vine ripened sliced tomato’s and lots of sliced sweet onions. Then of coarse the thick fluffy clouds of homemade mashed potatoes, topped with a deep rich gravy made from the drippings of the fried chicken. Let's not forget the truly southern deserts such as a sweet potato pie topped with a dollop of homemade sweet whipped cream or a piping hot deep dish apple pie or a large pan full of delectable peach or blackberry cobbler, definitely southern with the last two. Not a thing fancy with any of these and they all represent the Deep South. As a true southerner, I should tell you that we leave any concerns of cholesterol, grams of fat, carbs and diets, at the back door please! We enjoy eating and we eat to enjoy!

****CHICKEN FRIED STEAK FROM TEXAS****
2 pkg. tenderized cube or round steak
1 c. whole milk
1 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. black pepper
1 1/2 - 2 c. cooking oil
Good heavy skillet
I start heating my skillet first and when it gets warmed up (7 minutes), I add my cooking oil and let it heat also. While that is heating up, I get the steak ready, pound each steak with the side of a mallet or palm of your hand until very thin. Place steaks (2 at a time) in shallow dish containing milk. Next, mix the flour, salt and pepper in a shallow dish. Remove steak from milk, dredge in flour mixture, place into skillet and brown on both sides. Continue cooking until all steaks are cooked.
CREAM GRAVY:
1/3 c. hot steak drippings
1/4 c. flour
2 c. milk
Salt and pepper to taste
I use another skillet, let it get hot and add steak drippings, flour, salt and pepper. Stir with wire whisk until blended. Next add 2 cups milk, continuing to stir until gravy thickens. Serve with chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes.

Clam Boil! Steamer clams, lobsters, hot dogs, Chirico, sausages, onions and corn on the cob with lots of clam broth and butter for dipping. That's the best here in Cape Cod.
