It was a rack that he got from a buck he shot over the Thanksgiving weekend. I really tried not to look saddened, disgusted or disappointed, but I think I may have failed miserably as I tried to act like it was impressive or something, especially when he said, "You should have seen him, he was BEAUTIFUL!" I wanted to say, "So, you figured the best way to express yourself in the sight of his beauty was to kill him?"

Then I asked him if he kept the meat and he said, "Nah, we just cut out the tender loins and left the rest. Processing a deer is a LOT of work." I wanted to say, "Well, becoming a full-grown deer is a lot of work. The least you could have done was respect that and use it fully."

Then I asked him if he what he was going to do with the rack and he said, "I'm probably going to plaque it." I wanted to say, "Oh, cool. You should put a caption underneath, like 'I'm a Murderer.'"

All those things I wanted to say. How would you have handled this Christian differently?

I feel bad because I didn't speak my mind, but I didn't want to bring a whole new disagreement between us other than his Christianity and my atheism. We have enough to discuss there. Do you think I did the right thing by keeping my mouth shut?

I feel that it's necessary to point out that I'm not any sort of "animal rights activist" or anything, it's just that killing for its own sake doesn't sit well with me.

Killing for the sake of killing doesn't sit right with me either and I'm a Christian and there are non-believers who do the same so I think you're muddying the issue here. Hunting doesn't make you a bad person. Hunting and wasting a beautiful creature should be the issue. If you can't process the meat then you shouldn't waste the animal. Christian or not he was wrong. I probably would have addressed that issue in a non-confrontational way or left it alone.

Hmmm a toughy,I am a vegetarian and I would not harm an animal unless it was too put it out of it's misery and pain,
If I lived in a place where I had to hunt to eat I would have to get meat, the difference is you would take all of the animal and I would personally thank the animal for giving me life but just to stick its antlers on a wall and waste the rest of the animal when you don't even need the meat sums up the christian set of moral values.ie none...I would just ignore the person and if they ask what is up just say you have no interest in beautiful animals being slaughtered for his entertainment...fur looks so much better on the animal than some vaccuos brain dead bimbo...peace

This just shows you that even some Christians can be idiots. I feel that killing for food is ok, but to leave meat out to rot because it's "a lot of work" is just wrong, and I would have told him so. If all he wanted was the horns then he could have donated the rest to a charity. Take the "Christian and Atheist" out of it and see him as human. A stupid human. I hope you feel better by venting here, now let it go. Good Luck.

To believe in God or not is a personal choice that (in a perfect world) affects nothing. To believe in having respect for life or not believing that it is important to respect life is a very different type of choice.
He took the rack for bragging rights about killing a deer, took the tenderloins and left the rest of this animal to rot in the woods (the animal's home, which this man invaded).
Being a "Christian" is one thing, probably a meaningless thing, but the guy is a jerk who has no respect for life.
Avoid him.

a rather strange christian...I am very redneck and christian....unless you plan on using ALL OF THE MEAT don't go out and waste the time....

there is nothing impressive of having a deer head on your wall, looks better on the deer...are you going to use the hide?

if a person is not going to use all of the animal is there a place where the remains can be taken to be used??

when I lived in Oregon there was wild life safari...they appreciated the left overs for the animals kept there and the road kill crew would pick up many 'gifts " also for the lions.....

I couldn't agree with you more. I am Wiccan so you can imagine how I feel about hunting, but my husband likes to hunt so we have an agreement; he doesn't bring home anything that hasn't already been put into little packages and I don't ask any questions. I can say that when he does "get one" all of it gets used and if we can't use it ourselves then it gos to "hunters for the hungry." He doesn't keep any trophies either.

This guy you had to deal with is someone you have to work with so I wouldn't have said a lot to him but you can tell him that you don't agree with hunting for sport so you would like it if he would keep it to himself.

Good luck

Just realize that deer no longer have predators. and because of that, and mans' intrusion into their habitat, many of them are starving. Esp when young.

In my state, a lot of deer are killed when they run into the streets. They are all over the place and causing a great deal of damage. It is best to kill them quickly as your friend did.

However, I do agree with you that the entire carcass should be used. there are lots of soup kitchens in baltimore that would have been able to feed plenty of homeless people. and maryland has a program where deer meat can be turned in.

Christians are not averse to hunting and eating their kill. It was sad that the person would waste any meat (if, in fact they did) but God gives us animals to use in the way Adam did. If it had been my kill and I didn't want the meat, I would have called our local wolf sanctuary to tell them where it was. You sound a bit disenchanted with Christians in general. Are you sure you're not just looking for supporters of your cause? (Christian haters?) Christianity does require SOME obedience after all.

I think you did the right thing by keeping your mouth shut. Perhaps later you could tell him that the thought of hunting for any reason other than food utterly disgusts you.

For the record, I'm in agreement with you. I would have had to bite my tongue as well. My friends know better than to bring up hunting for sport with me.

I think I would have said something like "Well, I'm not into hunting, but as long as you ate all the meat..." Of course I would have said that without asking what he did with the meat... just assuming he was a decent person. It might have just made him think.

I doubt he'd have come into my office with it, though, since I have a reputation for being a lefty veggie freak! ;-)

Edit: *snicker* He better not try to plaque MY rack.... ;-)
