As a Catholic convert, I don't know enough about the faith. A Catholic may offer up sufferings for the salvation of the world. Correct?

Say a person has had great suffering in his/her past before becoming Catholic. Can that person offer up that suffering today?

Please explain this to me.

Thank You, Grace

Absolutely you can.

God is timeless. God can take a prayer out of our future and apply it to some situation long past, and vice-versa.

We can take a hardship we endured long ago, and offer it up as a sacrifice to the Lord today - and it will bear fruit most certainly.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'offering up suffering.' Are you talking about confession?

If so, then yes. Confession is a time when you can talk with the priest about things you feel remorse for and seek guidance in how to atone for those things and find some way of forgiving yourself, if possible. There is no 'statute of limitations' on what you discuss in the confessional.

And welcome to the Catholic faith! :) Our history isn't perfect, but we still have a lot of beauty and rich tradition to offer.

Yes, absolutely. God (this includes Jesus) is eternal. He always IS and He doesn't have a past or a future, only a NOW. So past sufferings can be offered up, no problem.

Of course. The suffering that we go through unites us with the suffering of Jesus for our benefit. Though our suffering is nothing compared to the suffering of Jesus, our suffering with courage inspires others who are also suffering. It also inspires others to have faith and trust in God.

Sorry to answer this, but this is nonsense. Please look to God for your salvation, not the RCC.

You can offer up no suffering for any purpose.
