We in the UK are extremely fortunate. The most fortunate pay the most tax but we have also had the greatest benefits. It makes me sad when I hear people whinging about and complaining, since the UK is GREAT ! We have the best society in this world, we have the highest wages in this world. We have a great government presiding who we were wise enough to elect. Sure, we do pay some tax, but so do people in many other countries and they get much less for it. When in the UK we are doing well we pay more, when we work in low paying jobs we are supported up to our needs. When we are ill we have a great national health service. We are truly priveleged ! Sure, it's a chore complying with red tape and paying tax, but it well worth it in the long term. Sure our dearly beloved island nation is not perfect but it is the best place on this planet, thinks me ! Come on all you people out there, appreciate our great fortune and fair deal ! Come rain or shine UK people stand together ! Welcome to UK !

I like your sentiments if only they were based in fact.

1) the most fortunate pay little if any tax at all...the majority of the burden is paid by middle and working class.

2) I love the british society I grew up in...the values of tolerance and openess are admired across the world...but unfortunately, there are large swathes that are becoming ghettos - where little assimilation and cross cultural exchange take place - in fact the opposite.

3) Probably 40% of the population didnt vote in the last election...

4) The idea of the national health service is fantastic - i think most would agree - its the articulation of that ideal that is tragically blundered in government after government. And the result is massive expense after each massive change.

5) Our educational system (sub-university) by and large is failing - hence many parents are forced to pay for a proper education for their kids - an additional tax if you will.

6) We talk a lot about problems and complain but we are being taken for a ride most of the time. Most are too busy working to really take issue....not really a participatory democracy at all...no evidence of enlightened dictator either...worst of both worlds...plus our leaders are not held to account. Egotisical muppets at best...who care not for the long term health of the nation. With all our wealth look at the state of the underground...much poorer countries have better transport systems... i could go on...

But when the sun comes out we all party for sure...

Sounds like something that could have been written in the US too - we have our share of complainers, some of them very vocal, just like the UK. UK and US are both great countries - but in both cases, some of the people getting the advantages of the country would rather b**ch about things than appreciate what they have than try to help fix the things that are wrong. Human nature, I guess, for some.

I don't see them racing off to move to another country though, even though some of our more vocal complainers said last election that they would if Bush was reelected.

These are two points (a) I do appreciate this country and having lived in other countries do not wish to live anywhere else, however (b) I do not appreciate this bunch of clowns in government who have more than doubled council tax and done a lot worse as well. Thank heaven Blair is gone, now we can concentrate on ridding the place of G. Brown and his shambles of a Government.

hmm I think your confused, highest wage....I dont think so! great national health service...I dont think so! priveledged...I dont think so!great goverment...I dont think so!

the NHS is the best place to go and get ill , catch something you never had before you went there , because it is so slack and it is not cleaned to standard....

our goverment is rubbish, it pays extra money to drug addicts so they can go and buy more drugs with our hard earned money which we pay in taxes to fund them!

UK the english should be proud of?....why should we when there is more foriegners here then there are english and yet our so called great goverment still allows them to come in by the lorry load!!...

our law is rubbish , child abusers get given new ID's so they can go and do it again

murderes are let out in 3 yrs for good behaviour

How can you even bring such a subject up when our GREAT goverment has just lost 4 cd's with millions of peoples details on.....

surely you have got to be having a laugh????
