She probably has a urinary tract infection. They associate the discomfort they feel with the litterbox, and so they urinate elsewhere. Take her or a urine sample to the vet.

Any time your cat shows behavior that's not normal for him, it's time for a trip to the vet. Urinating in odd places could signal a urinary tract infection, which can be really serious. You've probably cleaned your couch multiple times, but unless you've cleaned it with an enzymatic cleaner, some residue will remain and attract the cats. When kitty smells it, the signal is "go". Follow the directions on the container to remove all residue of the odor. Make sure you let the couch air out completely. The cleaner is better than trying to cover it up with some sort of deodorizer. However, if you still feel you need a deodorizer, I'd recommend X-O, which is available from janitorial supply stores and some online pet supply stores. Then kitty needs to spend a week in the bathroom for "litterbox retraining 101". It's a small place and will remind him that there is only one place to do his business. He needs to stay in the bathroom all the time for a week, with his litterbox, toys, food and water, and a kitty bed if he has one. Put a little water in the tub to keep him from thinking of the tub as his toilet. You can visit him often, but do not let him out. As added insurance, after kitty is out of the bathroom, I'd put some sort of throw or comforter on the couch to be sure everything is okay.

I agree with the others that say take your kitty to the vet. If she has been doing this on a regular basis then it signals that something is wrong with her.
I would say wash your cover in pine sol. I used this to get the smell out of my stuff when I had a cat that liked to pee on a certain set of sheets I had. That was the only place she would pee outside of the litterbox. I also had another cat that was a recue and refused to use the litterbox. The pine sol will help mask the scent of the cat pee. Just one capful per load. Once I used the pine sol I never had the problem again.
Good Luck with this!

It can be a dominace thing. Often if the cat isn't corrected when needed, they dominate their territory. Or it be a territory thing, where she feels she needs to mark her territory. Give her something that she can control, like on of those cat climber things. In any case, the cat can be having a bladder problem, to make sure, take her to the vet to see if thats what it is.
Maybe there's something on the couch, that she thinks it is her "potty area" like a smell. Animals are trained, by potty pads, that have a scent, they follow the scent.

my cat was doing this too when she was like 9 weeks old, and it was GROSSSSSS!!!! she did it like once a week for 2 months, i would wash the couch cushions but they can still smell it, they know their piss... she did it in the same spot everytime... well after 2 months i took her to the vet and it was because we were feeding her table scraps and when their that young they cant take it, but the vet said that it could be from seperation anxiety or whatever... since your cat is older im sure its not the food, it might just be that she marked it once and now shes going to keep doing it as long as she can smell it. maybe she thinks that its entertaining for you to have to clean it up... who knows cats are very finicky pets. i would say GET A NEW COUCH so she/he cant smell it anymore! good luck with that one tho! is anyone pregnant in the house? when i was pregnant my cat started to hate me and went thru this phase where she wouldnt use the litterbox she wanted to go pee on ME at like 5 in the morning... needless to say she accidently got my hubby one morning and he yoked her up and threw her *** on the back porch with no food for a few hours and she got the hint REAL QUICK! maybe she needs a good ol *** whoopin! :)

If you haven't already, have the vet check her for a UTI or other conditions that affect the urinary tract - sometimes bladder irritation will be associated with the litter box and cause a cat to avoid it.

You need to take her into the vet. She is telling you that something is wrong.
My cats don't urinate anywhere but the litter box.

I don't know, but explore the possibility of taking her to your vet. She may be having kidney problems. She may be exhibiting territorial behavior.
