I am thinking of changing my diet, due to weight problems, and am wondering about venison as a substitute for beef. Isn't it much leaner? Also, is all the hype about red meat being bad just because of the fat content (if not what is a good/good-tasting source of protien)?

In good health and fitness it is always about good and bad in moderation. In not-so-good health and fitness everything is bad; eggs, sugar, salt and my favorite red meat.

Red meats are not bad as long as you keep intake low and aim for leaner and healthier cuts. According to NutritionData.com venison is a lean meat with more protein content (links below). There are benefits from eating some red meat; iron, folate b vitamins, creatine. that usually shocks people but its true. As a general rule the higher quality the kind of meat, Veal, Bison, Buffalo.. the better it will be for you. As one of my fitness mentors once told me about meat. "Which cow do you want your steak from... the one who lives in a stable his whole life waiting for you to eat it or the one who has been out grazing and moving about most of it's life?"

Since weight loss is your goal I'd suggest no more than twice a week for red meat. Focus on eating Chicken and Fish as alternate sources of protein. Despite all the cholesterol hype over eggs they are still one of the best sources on healthy protein. If you are concerned about fat intake with eggs, just eat the whites that is where the protein really is.

Good Luck
