That is never a pleasant situation. Unfortunately, you must do what you have to do. Take her aside in private and calmly and pleasantly explain to her why you must cut her salary. She may already be aware of it! If she's not, stay professional and explain it to her and how the job pay works again. When she signed on to the job, it should have been noted how the pay structure works. She should understand without too much fuss. Good luck.

I don't think you can legally drop her salary. You better check with a lawyer, a labor lawyer, first, or this could end up costing you more than an employee.
That being said... You are very unprofessional to develop a close relationship with someone who works for you.

You need to do this formally as you are making a change to the terms of her employment contract, so you need to renegotiate.

I do not know the circumstances of you professional relationship with her, home or office. But you both need to sit down over coffee and discuss your circumstances. She may be more receptive than you think. We quite often know in advance of being told.

If you need to reduce her hrs, then this is one thing, but if you want to reduce her wages, this is something quite different and you'll need to check on your local laws to see if they affect this.

Just explain to her that you no longer need her to do the particular job and trust she will understand that you will adjust her pay accordingly.
