I'm sure this has been asked before on here, but I'm wondering if anyone thinks any martial artist or MMA fighter could have ever beaten the legendary Bruce Lee? If so.... who, and why do you think they would win?

In his own weight class, not many. Bruce weighed about 135 lbs at his peak so anyone heavier by over 50 to 100 pounds would have a good chance of beating him depending on skill level. Bruce was primarily a striker and was reputed to have great hand strength and speed. So even if he was stronger than most people in his weight class, his strength would become relatively weaker against stronger and heavier opponents, so if their speed and skills were about even, a guy 100 lbs heavier would have the advantage over him. Besides, Bruce did say he was wary of grapplers and preferred to strike and stay on his feet to make good use of his handspeed. And his strongest weapon against bigger and heavier opponents was the sidekick, which if neutralized by a grappler basically rendered him vulnerable.

Could Bruce Lee Actually Fight

Bruce Lee took what worked from anything he studied. (an argument can be made that he is the father of the modern mixed martial arts movement, but that's for another time)
If Bruce and MMA coexisted at the same moment in time, then Bruce surely would have learned from it, and it would have been the perfect venue for him to excel in. (I'm not saying he'd be the undefeated champ or any nonsense like that, just that he would likely do very well)
Also, keep in mind that he was "challenged" often, and reputedly never lost (and these challenges weren't set up so that he only had to fight those in his weight class!). Is it far fetched to assume that he faced at least some grappling experts? (this seems to be the real issue when discussing whether Bruce Lee could have beaten modern MMA fighters)

The bottom line is he absolutely would have fared extremely well aginst modern fighters, including MMA fighters. I'm certainly not saying he'd never loose a fight, but he absolutely wouldn't be overwhelmed by us MMA guys (I'm one)

Cnotes right that we don't have much evidence, and it is mostly speculation. He stole my thunder and said most of what I was going to say. But can people who obviously never read or studied anything about the man stop commenting? He wasn't just an actor. He deeply studied the martial arts, and was highly regarded by many people in the martial arts world. If you don't know this, you know nothing of the man. I can't believe some of the answers I see from people who have no idea. No, he shouldn't be worshiped as some sort of god, but he was a very talented martial artist, and not just an actor. Also, he said that he wouldn't fight in real life the way he "fought" in movies. In movies, he did a lot of flashy things that looked good on film.

I believe it was Chuck Norris who said that Lee was pound for pound the best fighter he knew. Lee studied the art in a way similar to the way many mma fighters do now, although I don't know how much ground fighting he was exposed to. But he studied many different styles, and took what he liked from them.

Each of Chuck Norris's chest hairs is a martial arts master. Fact: Bruce Lee ripped out a handful of Chuck's chest hair.

Anyone who sparred with bruce lee doubt anyone could beat him. Only beat him posthumously the dead cant defend themselves.

Jim Kelly said Bruce lee was a level above everyone else and no champion could have beat bruce lee in his era, that's good enough for me.

Anybody that says someone could beat Bruce Lee is a ignorant idiot. They just haven't done their research.

Everyone has their own weaknesses, like the child's game of rock, paper, and scisors. Each in turn defeats another. Bruce Lee's one inch punch knocked a heavy man down. His glare looked like it could petrify. His mild kicks "felt like getting hit by a car." He taught, practiced and mastered many styles, and taught "The way of the intercepting fist." He found enlightenment in the Martial Arts, and described the definition as expressing one's self through movement. He inspired many, and devastated the world when he died suddenly of a Brain Edema. Rumors Spread of his survival, just like Elvis, but the world still sadens at that fact that he really is physically gone.

Many argue that Norris or Seagal or Chan could have overcome his greatness and honor with ease, but none are true. Nobody defeats anyone with ease. The rush is unavoidable, and each fight, even the bully against the nerd, pulls some energy out of each.

Norris once fought Lee in a movie, dying shortly after having his arm and leg broken.

Lee also fought(rather dramatically killed) Chan in another movie, such a short moment that little people even recognized Chan. http://youtube.com/watch?v=WTl_ZSaeDBo

You can Tell i'm a Lee supporter, but I have accepted that no man or woman is superior to all. All life is equal, despite one's skill in fighting.

In the gang he hung and trained with in Hong kong He was considered good but not the best in his group. He was a child actor in China and that took him away from his training frequently. Although he was great I don't believe he was the best of his day. Certainly he helped advance Eastern Martial Arts and is a Hollywood legend and won a few exhibition matches weather he was the best will never be settled.
Some of his students went on to be great in their own right. This says a lot about the man. Had he finished his training in Wing Chun and lived a bit longer, Spent more time in the ring and off the movie set he probably would have settled this question. It is too hard to fight a legend.

Think of what any well known MA can do to you and consider that the price of victory.

If you are willing to risk paying that price and if you do pay it keep on fighting then chances are good you can beat anybody.

People who idolize BRUCE LEE are actually copping out as an excuse not to try to be as excellent in their own way as he was in his. They try to be like him and fail his message wasn't about technique.

I don't think Lee was the best, but he could fight
Bruce was trained in Wu Tai Chi Chuan (also known as Ng-ga) and Jing Mo Tam Tui for the twelve sets. He was trained in the martial arts Choy Li Fut, Western Boxing, Épée fencing, Judo, Praying Mantis Kung-fu, Hsing-I, Jujitsu.

He also trained in Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do and was known to have traded techniques with Judo Gene Lebell, the Tae Kwon Do World Champion and other well known martial artists.

He had a big fight history too, these are some of his street fights, it was virtually impossible to land a hit on him and all of his fights ended in seconds except for one.

He was asked to fight by a Karate Black Belt at the YMCA Handball Court, Ed Hart who was the time keeper stated "the fight lasted exactly 11 seconds and every one thought Bruce had killed him”.

He was called out by an extra on the set of Enter The Dragon who was shouting that his just an actor and not a fighter. They threw one shot each, Bruce deflected it with his shoulder then kicked the guy in the face. It was so fast the guy didn't even notice it, when he opened his mouth to laugh at Bruce, loads of blood and teeth came out, but Instead of firing the extra he decided to give him some tips about fighting.

He was challenged by another street fighter, he beat the guy landing 22 punches and 1 kick.

He went out to his back garden to find that a challenger had climbed over his wall for a fight, he was so angry at the guy he defeated him breaking his ribs with one side kick. He told Herb Jackson that it's the hardest kick his ever done to someone for putting his family in danger.

He won another match against a Savate Master winning with one side kick in front of all his students, the Master was so embarrassed he apologised to Bruce for underestimating his power.

Comparing him to Chuck Norris is ridiculous. Chuck is a tournament fighter who has lost where as Bruce is an undefeated street fighter (on the streets there are no rules making him more of a dangerous fighter), Chuck used to tell everyone that nobody could beat Bruce when he was alive but now that his dead he goes around saying that he could beat him and did you know that Chuck almost refused to take part in Way of The Dragon if it didn't look like a close match? what a little baby.

For a guy only 5 foot 7 tall with the speed of a five hundredths of a second punch (0.05) also known as the unstoppable punch because he used to tell people where his going to hit them and they still couldn't block it. The power of his side kick could burst a 100lbs bag in half, make a 300lbs bag hit the ceiling and apparently it feels like being hit by a car so that just goes to show how great he was.
