1. Is parking at the Ala Moana Mall free or pay.

2. Waikiki seems to have lots of one way streets. How patient are the locals with out-of-towners who are not familiar with how to get around.

Aloha, peddlepup...you will have a blast in Hawaii. That mall has a unique mix of high end and not so high end places. You will like it. It is interesting and beautiful. It has 4 floors of cool stuff. You can walk to it from a lot of places. The downtown area is not as spread out as L.A. The whole area is built for tourists so I don't think you will have any traffic problems.
You should take the submarine trip while you are down there. It is pretty neat...It is not such a good area to hang out late at night...but during the day you will think you are in some city in Asia...

Parking at the malls is free. Ala Moana is expensive for stores, but there are some unique ones that are nice to go through. Plus certain chains only have one there.

Yes it can be confusing with the one way streets but you will soon get the hang of it. Just remember if you are heading for the mountains you are leaving the beach area, if you don't see the mtns then you are heading for the beaches. Locals are usually staying away from Waikiki or park away from the tourist traffic. You can always park at Ala Moana and walk down to Waikiki or take the bus. Then you don't have to worry about driving. The transit system is really good. I used to take it all the time to work, definitely less stressful.

I lived in Hawaii (Honolulu), several years ago.
I can tell you everything is VERY expensive !
The mall parking is free. And yes, Islanders (not the Japanese), are very patient with out of towners. Japanese own pretty much everything in Honolulu and are very rude.
Public transportation, however is available and very cheap.
That may be a better bet for you.

Free parking at the mall. That mall is extremely crowded and they only have really pricey stores.I recommend driving to the Pearl ridge mall in pearl city.
Waikiki does have a lot of one-way streets but they are very easy to navigate!Don't worry about it!
