You don't leave it on, apply when water is added it foams cleanse throughly then rinse. Face wash is detergent based and can overdry the skin if not careful.

Most products recommend rubbing lather over skin for 45-60 seconds, then rinsing well.

not any longer that it takes to rub it around and then rince it off. it's the friction that cleans, leaving it on for any extended time might dry out your skin, but otherwise it wont do a thing for you.
