I have bought a TV aerial in London (Crystal Palace Transmitter). If I take the aerial to Weymouth, will it still work? I have noticed that in London the dipoles are horizontal but in Weymouth they are vertical.

As long as its pointing in the same direction as the other aerials in the area it should work perfectly

Televison aerials are different sizes.

It's not just the number of "elements" which they have - that just determines how sensitive the aerial is.

The length and spacing of the elements also varies - that determines which rf frequency they are optimise for. This difference is not so apparent unless you hold two different ones together.

The different dimensions are known as "Groups" and each transmitter has a distinct aerial group asssigned to it.

For best reception your aerial should be the same Group as the transmitter at which it is pointing. It helps if you mount it so that polarity (horizontal or vertical) is correct too.

For Weymouth you'll be pointing at the Stockland Hill transmitter. The following link to the BBC technical site will help you.

If the rods are the same length then mount it vertical and it will work just fine
Cheers Pete
PS All that the Tank says is correct !!
My answer is the same but without the embroidery !!
Good luck with your move ! Weymouth is a great place to live !!!

you need to buy a new aerial unfortunately because the vertical and horizontal are on two different wavelengths to avoid signal interference, you can keep turning the aerial around until you get a responce but it might not work, also turning it on its side will not work very well or not work at all
