DNA studies show that Siberian Huskies are a very ancient breed, and not related to wolves any more than any other dog.

All dogs are related to wolves. Huskies are no closer to wolves than any other breed.
If you've ever seen a real wolf, up close....you can definitely see how very different they are from a Husky or Malamute. Huskies and other northern breeds do have a "wild" look to them, similar to other primitive breeds. That's what gets people confused. But most people haven't ever taken their SUV's anywhere more wild than the mall on Black Friday so wouldn't know a real wolf if they saw one :)
Here's a good site that explains why Huskies look "wolfish" even though they're not any more close to the wolf than a Chihuahua:

No more than any other dog, but that's a common experience for Sibe owners. I've had it happen quite a few times myself, when I would have one of mine out in public. And I've been asked that about my Akitas, also, which physically don't resemble wolves as much as Huskies. I've also been asked if they were Huskies.
However, the genetic relationship of all dogs to wolves is quite close, considering that you can produce fertile offspring from wolf x dog breedings.
One way they are closer to wolves than breeds like Cocker Spaniels which retain puppy-like characteristics as adults, is that they display and respond to a wider range of the signals - ear position, tail position, stance, vocalizations, etc., that wolves use to communicate things like status and emotional state.

All dogs are related to wolves in the sense that they are descended *from* wolves.
Huskies may *resemble* wolves in some respects, more than other breeds. But it is true that most people couldn't really tell you what makes a wolf a wolf.

It is rather annoying isn't it. I hate it when I am walking my two huskys and people either stop and say look a wolf or they back their kids away from my dogs. (Need i say I walk them with my two toddlers) So they are not anything to fear. It annoys the crap outta me.
I got it ten times as bad tho as one of mine is an all white husky and is always either being called a wolf or a white Shepard. Know your breeds people!!!

all dogs are decendents of the wolf from a long time ago {do i want to say primitive?} but through maaaannnny many hundreds of thousands of years of breeding they have come to what they are today. {yes the chihuahua is a far off decendent of a wolf, too!}
some people actually resent the fact that their dog could porssible be from "a wolf". i know poepl who will not admit to it.

they are no more related than any other breed of dog.
Some people wouldnt know what a real wolf looks like if it bit them on the butt. They see a medium sized dog with a thick coat that is any shade of grey and think its a wolf.

Shame I know how you feel. Just tell people that they are no more wolf than a French Poodle and has been a pure bred dog for centuries.

No, but they look like them don't they? Malmutes too get mistaken for wolves. They are hardy dogs bred for pulling dog sleds in alaska and other cold climates!
