The Empire State if the weather is clear.... You will find the view breathless.... And Central park by DAY....
Maddison Square Garden is a must as is Macey's, which will blow you away.... When there last Dec., they had a full size toy elephant for sale and the most amazing christmas grotto...
Book a Cab and go for a drive around the Christmas Lights... They really know how to 'Do' Christmas.
Go to the Rockerfeller Centre and watch the Ice skaters, then walk up the slope away from the Skating RInk and watch and listen in amazement as they play Carols and project them onto the buildings as huge snow flakes that flash to the music.
Lastly go SOUTH to the Italian part and Visit Katz's Deli, which was made famous in the film 'when harry met sally' it is a fabulous food place too and you will almost certainly see someone famous there.... And the staff are brilliant too....
Hope that helps....

You must visit the Empire State Building - pretend you're Fay Wray to your boyfriends King Kong, get there early to avoid queues. Take a walk through Times Square and then to the Flatiron building. Central Park is a must see for during the day always something going on there.Get some pics of the Guggenheim museum, the building itself is a work of art. Try to make a broadway show - book tickets online now for great discounts. If broadway doesnt do it for you then there is nothing quite like a New York showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Village has some great comedy clubs and are a pretty cheap way to laugh away a couple hours.

There's so much to do there, and so much to see that you could spend a lifetime exploring! My advice is to take an open-top bus tour of the city (from various places - see any travel guide). That way, you get to see the city from a fantastic vantage point (all the beautiful buildings that you can't see from street level, for example) plus, you can make a mental note of what you'd like to go back to look at in more detail later. Have a wonderful break!

Earliest thing should be to start in Battery Park and decide Liberty or Ellis Island and work your way up to Central Park.
All depends on what type of things you're interested in because there's a lot to do in the tri-state and how much you have to spend unless the boyfriend's treating.
I would try to do sightseeing activities before noon.

you will miss the tree lighting by a day, but go to Rockefeller center for the ice skating. the windows are decked out in the xmas decorations always a sight to see (lords and taylors always go all out for their stuff). even though they are crowded, but toys r us on 44th st (indoor ferris wheel) and fao schwartz (giant floor piano from the movie big) are always a big hit. you can go to the view the city from above from either the top of the empire state building or the top of the rock. and then you have the muesuems like the madam toussand's wax muesuem, ripley's believe it or not, the hayden planetarium and muesuem of natural history
Oh yeah, if you are a shopaholic there's a lot of sales here in nyc stores and right by fao schwartz is the ipod store (a huge hit in nyc) Have a great time
