I can only assume from this question being in R&S that you're talking about God loving anyone among mankind's ranks. I ask myself this same question and I'll be damned if I can find an answer. Maybe I'm just becoming more and more of a misanthrope myself. I sure hope not.

It depends on how selfish or proud they are.
If they are only selfish or proud to a small extent, then I think it's okay.
