I would say start with the self-help section of either the library or the bookstore. it is very early here and I can't think of any titles right now... I am sure I have some.... I think there is one ll Healing the inner child. didn't say what your addict is so at a loss of what to say a good book for tht is.... start with going to AA even if it isnt alcohol that is the addiction there are many good things to learn from them about addictions

Try some Kahlil Gibran, amazing Lebanese spiritual poet. You can find all his stuff online free, as his works have entered the public domain. His best-known is "the prophet".
Here's a line, one of my very favorites from anyone:
"the deeper that Sorrow carves into your Being,
the more Joy you can contain..."
For a great novel that is deep, moving, interesting, light, and totally silly and hilarious all at the same time, how about "Breakfast of Champions" by Kurt Vonnegut.
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse is definitely up there also.

If you are looking for a self help book that can keep you on track through your recovery i'd suggest
"Women who love too much"
I can't remember right at this moment who wrote it but it helped me recover from abuse and i found it comforting to know it wasn't just me. Personally i found it really hard to read at first as i could identify with atleast something in every story but i persevered and the message sunk in.
If you are up for a laugh try any of the 'Furry Logic' series

Are you looking for a funny book to cheer you up or a book to inspire you.
A book for inspiration is The Monk who sold his Ferrari. Truly inspiring and actually quite funny in places. Not a religious book, despite the title, but a mans personla journey from his own need for inner and outer recovery.
A funny book, erm now let me see. I have to say Peter Falk Just one more thing. I am a huge Columbo fan and his latest book is hilarious, his sense of humour is just out there. Not quite sure what you are looking for so cant be much help. These are just two of my fave books. Or anything by the Dalai Lama I have lots of his books and they are not heavy but truly inspirational.
