The mother.
I work in the medical field and this is almost always the case. There's no certain reason. People don't sit around and think, "hmmmm. Who should we save?" Its just instinctive to save the mother. They ALWAYS try to save both, but when it all boils down to one or the other, it will be the mother.
Fortunately, life is not as dramatic as it is in the movies and televisions shows. I've RARELY had to deal with a situation like that.

They should save the one who has a higher chance of surviving after the situation is over. And if the probability is equal for both then they should save the mother...unless the mother willing agrees that they should save the child instead...why? id prob say because the mother has alot more to leave behind in this world, things and people that depend and rely upon her, while the child although completely innocent has none...thats a hard question to answer

That type of cases comes quite often, and I would definately ask to save mother, Because baby we can plan later on or we can adopt a child but not mother. Another reason is it is too hard to sustain a baby without his mother.

I have been a L&D nurse for the past 5 years and never has this ever come up. We would always try to save both. We have saved mothers who were deathly ill related to the pregnancy and the baby has died but we always tried to save both.

If the doc is the one making the decision, I believe they choose based on who has the greater chance of survival. If they are equal, I believe the mother is choosen
However, they would first consult a living will, then the next of kin. A doc would only be making that decision if neither a living will or next of kin were available.

I hope I'm never forced to make that decision. But if it were my daughter having the baby, I would choose my daughter. However if my daughter had a serious illness that would prevent her from living a good life or a long life, I would've asked her early in the pregnancy what her wishes were. You have to talk about those things!!!! But, If I had to make the call in that situation, I would choose the baby. And never get over it as long as I lived!

The mother. She already has a life started. And since I believe in reincarnation I figure that soul that was going to be the baby can just choose to be reborn at another time.

the mother. chances are she will be able to have another child. it's not a very hard decision personally. the mothers life is so much more significance to everyone around her compared to the newborn child.

Thankfully these days it's not a choice that has to be made very often.
I think that an expecting couple should talk about this sticky issue.
For me, I would want them to save my child, however would defer to my husband if he felt otherwise.
