does the end of the world(as we know it) start in 2008 and end in 2012?

The 2012 thing is an anceint Mayan prophecy predicting a natural catastrophy of some sort. There is much debate as to what that catastrophe is, or if this is just a play on numbers. It has nothing to do with the religious prophecies of rapture tribulation armegeddon and the end of the world.

Interesting fact... watch the series finale of the X Files, it plays on this prediction, with one theory of what the Mayans may have predicted... Obviously, this is tv and given the nature of this fictional show, it was geared toward alien infestation and over taking of the planet. But the basics of what the show played on is one popular theory.

The end of the world started at the moment everything began, and will probably end some hundreds of billions of years from now when the sun becomes a dying blue giant.

I'll let you know in 5 years. One of the best indications that you're not in a stupid religion is that you don't set a date for the end of the world. It impresses me that the Mayans predicted this alignment of the sun with the milky way in 2012. I'm duly impressed. It moves so slow, you'd have to make quite accurate observations to figure that out. The problem, of course, is that no alignment of stars is going to end the world. I mean, there's simply no cause-and-effect. So I'll just wait and see.
