AVG is good for detecting viruses, but spyware is a different beast. You will also need anti-spyware software, such as Spybot Search & Destroy.
The problem with Spybot Search & Destroy is that it provides (what I think) is a lot of 'power' (perhaps too much 'power' for the novice user).
You might also install SpywareBlaster.
Whichever one you use, you need to read up on the 'features' so that you don't make changes that you may not mean to make to your system.
It's important to read and learn what you're up against, and what each of the tools that you use is meant to do. Read, read, read. That's the ticket.
When you have learned what malignant activities are aimed at your computer when you're 'online', you'll be better able to combat them with the many free tools that are at your disposal.

Microsoft Windows Defender. Simply install and forget. It's not as powerfull as Spybot S&D or Adaware but looses the annoying Red/Yellow Flags and is dead simple to use. Should serve you well unless you Trawl the 'nasties'@.Net.

I use Spyware Terminater, it comes with the Crawler toolbar that lets you know if a site is dangerous or if it tries to download crap to your PC. But I also run Spybot once a week because it does get rid of tracking cookies.

There are many free spyware programs out there, I use Ad-Aware SE and it works great for me, but others may suggest their own personal preferences.
