Islam is the number one most misunderstood religion in the world.
And also has a lot of bad press which doesn't really help its case. More then 1 billion people practice Islam worldwide.

Here is a fair representation of what the religion preaches.

Islam means surrender, it does not mean peace as most people like to believe. Salam means peace, it is a closely related word in islam. One of islams major theme is peace however, but it is not its most prominant theme.

This is what islam is mostly about:
Islam is a very intimate religion, between creation and creator. It's prominant message is for the creation to humble themselves enough to worship the One and only God. Islam is monothiestic in the most purest form. Attached to the belief of God, us muslims must also believe that Mohamed is the final messanger of God.
The quran says a lot, you should read it...learn arabic if you have the time some time, its beautiful in arabic.

10 most important beliefs in Islam
1. Believe in one God
2. Belief in the last messenger
3. and the rest of the list is debatable..

The Guardian and Bestower Of Faith (Al-Mu’min)
59:23 God is He, than Whom there is no other god;- the Sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of Peace (and Perfection), the Guardian of Faith, the Preserver of Safety, the Exalted in Might, the Irresistible, the Supreme: Glory to God! (High is He) above the partners they attribute to Him.

Interpretation:
(Ascribed to God are safety and security and only He conveys the means to attain them. The absolutely faithful one is God, because it is from His direction that safety and security are conceivable. He is the one in whom we can place all of our trust.)

Practical Application:
(Believers can apply faithfulness in their lives by keeping God’s creatures away from harm and protecting others from the punishment of God by showing them to the way of God.)
