I'm 15 and I live in michigan and I recently got caught stealing a necklace and some earings, which was only 22 dollars worth (stupid, i know.) This is the first time I've ever done something like this and i have no previous record, I know i have to pay the store back but I'm just curious as to what's likely going to happen to me legally. Has anybody ever experienced something similar to this or has knowledge with this type of situation?

If you plead guilty and request a lenient sentence from the court, probably you will be sentenced to pay:

1. The value of the stolen property.
2. Any other restitution the judge deems appropriate.
3. Court fees.

Also, you will likely be given some sort of community service sentence where you will be forced to do some sort of labor for the state.

But, the upside is that you are a juvenile. So, you will have your record sealed. HOWEVER. If you do not redeem yourself, you may be marked as a habitual offender. And, that is something that cannot be "sealed" for you.

So... Please.... Do yourself a favor and let this be the end. America is very nice to give you a second chance. Try not to push it...

Also... Be aware that you are always able to get your criminal record expunged if and when you live a clean lifestyle for a few years.

Chances are that yes, you'll have to pay the store back, plus you'll get some sort of penalty. It might be community service or probation, or possibly a fine, though that's less likely.

The store might also seek what's called "civil recovery", which is a process whereby they can recover an extra amount from you over and above the value of the merchandise.

wow.
i live in MI also.
and i just recently got caught stealing..(and i feel really stupid and i feel like scum.this was my first time. and my last time!!)im underage also.you should feel very lucky that you have learned your lesson now.before you got the 'legal age'.
i have no record also and i know i have to go to court for this.
you will have to pay a fine for the items you stole..i bet around $300-400 . you might be on probation.
they usually don't do community service if your underage and don't have your license. that is what i have been told . good luck.and hopefully you learned your lesson like me.
