First off, don't get hung up with notion that blends are somehow inferior, they are not. In fact, the only reason blended whiskies were made in the first place was because single malts were so damn harsh that only the locals drank them and they had to be watered down. The single malts of today are a marketing phenom to sell more whisky and many of those ancient recipes had to change formulas to become a lot more palatable than they were in the past. Last on this issue, blending is an art, it takes the best single malts and creates a signature whisky that is consistent year in and year out.
Now in terms of JW Black or Chivas, the price point is about the same, but the taste is very different. It is meant to be. Chivas is meant for the consumer, who likes a more peaty, oak and robust flavor. Black on the other hand, is slightly smokey, subdued with a tiny hint of sweetness. I've tried both, and I prefer Black hands down.

Both are blends so it really boils down to which taste better to you. I personally like Chivas for the 12yr (JW Black is 12 yr) however if you are moving up to 18yr JW (green) beats Chivas hands down on that one - again is a different blend and the 18yr blends JW has goes smother with me.

It's a matter of taste. My favorite is Glenfiddich. My second favorite is Glenlivet. Of the two you mention I like Johnnie Walker Black slightly better. But, it's what tickles your taste buds. I've included a link to Whiskey.com's top sellers in the Single Malts.

Better is subjective, so you've answered your own question: you like Chivas better. If you want something different and better, upgrade to the 18 or try some of the single malts they use to make Chivas, it's mostly Strathisla and Longmore, plus (probably) some Glenlivet and Glen Keith.

Chivas is smoother and doesn't give you a hangover like JWB.
