My sister and I recently both got cats. As children, we always had dogs, so we're both really new to kittens. Her cat is much younger than mine by at least a month, her eyes are never opened all the way, and they're constantly leaking. Her nose is also consistently runny and she's balding by her ears. She also isn't near as playful as my kitten. She also doesn't take kitty treats [which my kitten goes nuts for]. Are these normal? Could she be sick? Could it be kitty leukemia?

Hi there...it may be possible the kitten may have an upper respiratory infection (URI). Left untreated this can become fatal especially in younger kittens. Generally, a veterinarian will prescribe an antibiotic for the secondary infections common with URI and within a week the symptoms will clear.

Your sister's kitten is in urgent need of a visit to the vet. No, it isn't normal for a kitten to have these symptoms. It sounds like some sort of upper respiratory problem, so I would make sure the kittens are separated from each other, or they will both become ill. What she can do for now is gently wipe the kitten's eyes from the nose outward and also wipe the kitten's nose. Left untreated, an upper respiratory infection can lead to pneumonia, which isn't fun to treat, especially for kitty.

It is not normal for cats to have hair loss and runny eyes. She should be separated from the healthy kitten and taken to vet now. She should be tested for leukemia all cats should.

she probably has a respiratory infection or some other infection causing the matted eyes... and if she's balding by the ears, she might have ringworm, or mange mites.. it's hard to say.
if you and your sister are going to have pets, then you really need to follow though and be responsible by getting them to vets for immunizations and proper medical care.
and if your kitten has been exposed to your sister's kitten, and has not had shots, get it to the vet right away.
YES your sister's kitten could be, and is sick... WHY don't people take baby animals to the vet? I don't get it.

Cats always get colds.. Thats probably all it is.. If you have any antibiotics at home sprinkle them in its food. If that doesnt work I would take it to the vet.. and NO I dont think that the kitty has leukemia.. You dont lose hair from the cancer you lose it from the chemo! Hope this helps!

Kittens are more suceptible to illnesses early in life. She sounds like she has an eye infection - go get it checked out at the vet.

Please do not as one person advises sprinkly antibiotics on their food. You need to take the kittens to the vet, I would take both of them as if they have been together the infection most likely has spread.
Take them in separate carriers or at different times but get both of them checked out as soon as possible.
