The smoke was coming from the vent area where the light bulb is. I immediately unplugged the microwave and the smoke stopped but I'm wondering if the microwave is a potential hazard and if I should put it outside in case it decides to catch on fire in the middle of my sleep tonight? I live in an apartment and I was thinking of putting it out on the balcony to protect me and my cat. Should I do anything else, call the fire department and have them take it?

Once you unplugged it, you removed the source of energy. The internal temperature will quickly drop. As long as it's not plugged in again, It won't harm anything.

When it comes down to electronics, sometimes parts go bad and short out. Items that cause fire hazards when they short out while not connected to power are batteries and high power capacitors. Microwaves do not use either.

I suggest simply throwing it out since it will likely cost more to fix than it would to buy a new unit.

You need to identify if the smoke is coming from the microwave itself or from the food you where cooking.

If the smoke was coming from cooking food, just clean it out and it should be okay.
If the smoke was coming from the microwave itself, then it's a bad sign, have it fixed or dumped.

You don't worry at all and just relax.
Plug the microwave again, if it smokes now ! take it to the company and ask for assistance.
If it doesn`t smoke this time , keep using it.
But dont forget to remove the plug after you have used it.
