Freeview did an experminent with HDTV in part of London. It didn't last long and was just a proof-of-concept.

At the moment there are no HD transmissions on Freeview because they don't have the bandwidth. When spectrum finally becomes available there would have to be a massive and hugely expensive programme of trannsmitter works to enable HD broadcasts on Freeview. Also, because of commercial contstraints, the four terrestrial broadcasters may not all be able to initiate it at the same time anyway.

HD is only available on Sky or Cable or HD/Blu-ray DVD players. As there are very few HD channels available, and Sky charge a ludicously high price for their HD box and HD subscription, it's probably not worth it at the moment. There's better things to spend your money on......

Many new 'conventional' DVD players (such as Panasonics) connect to the telly via an HDMI cable. They up-convert a DVD to "pseudo-HD". Because the DVD itself is already a digital domain device this technique provides an extremely good picture which is much better than you'd get from using S-Video or RGB via a SCART.

It could be another 10 years before HD Freeview happens so don't worry about it.
Your built in Freeview tuner will give you better quality pictures than most external boxes anyway so enjoy it.

At this present time, the only way you can receive HD television broadcasts, is via cable or satellite.

You cannot receive hi-def broadcasts through a Freeview box.

You said it, you need a HD decoder like Sky or one of the Cable boxes but you can buy a hddvd and watch them or a PS3 and get Blu-ray which is more hi-def than Hi-def or you can not bother! best of luck in your disappointment!

Your unique placed up did not make countless experience to me i'm afraid. Being tied right down to a Virgin Media contract is really beside the point on your subject. it type of feels you are able to wish a sparkling digital aerial put in which will be expensive (till your prepared to do it your self). You stated that the previous proprietor had sky and has left the dish cable ect.,........ you are able to try getting a loose to air container or a freesat container put in, it can be the most inexpensive and least puzzling decision
