I just put on a suit and tie, with a dress shirt and black shoes. You can take off the jacket at dinner, but I'm going to tell you, a basic black suit and tie will make you look like most of the other males in the dining room. You don't have to be black tie or white tie to be accepted. Plus, I'll let you in on a secret - formal is FAR easier for a guy than a girl.
Girls have to worry about the dress. The length (too much leg, or not enough), the cut (too low, or too stiff), the color, the fabric, the arms, the pattern, the belt. Then there is stockings and purses and shoes to match, and jewelry. There is makeup and nail polish. Finally, there is the no-man's land of hair. Don't get involved in that - women spend hours thinking up or down, and either way involves a choice of curling or pinning or something else.
Still, don't worry about being super formal, just go with a basic black suit and you won't go wrong.

The main thing that you need to know is that the formal nights are REQUESTED and not REQUIRED attire. So you can dress up if you want or go casual the same as every other evening if you want. If you go to the main dining room for diner you must always were slacks and a shirt with a collar. No shorts, sneakers, flip-flops, tank tops or "T" shirts. So on the formal night just wear what you have been wearing other nights. If you want to upscale just a little, wear a suit but no tie.
On formal night most people do dress up and have pictures taken or take their own around the ship. So if your parents want a photo with you in it, wear a suit until the photo is taken and then after dinner go change back into casual stuff. We usually dress formal for dinner and picture and then change clothes, and many other do the same.

You will be just fine in what you have decided to wear. The only thing they do not allow in the dining room is shorts. I went to the dining room on the first few cruises, but I missed too much, so now I skip all the formal stuff and just do all the casual stuff. It is a matter of preference. Have fun. That is what you are paying to do. Good luck and by all means, have fun. :)

hi alex. first, i hope you have a great time on the cruise. carnival is the best ship i've been on. the formal dinners are usually on the second night of the cruise but your steward will let you know. i've seen people wear evening gowns and tuxedos but i just put on a nice dress that i would wear to a club or prom. so you don't have to be super proper but just look nice. dress shoes, slacks, dress shirt (a tie for added flair). have fun!
