I respect Christianity and other monotheistic religions, but just thought this was an interesting question because I believe Catholics think that the wafer becomes the actual body of Christ after it is blessed. I could be wrong about that so let me know, but if I'm right, then she must be allergic to Jesus!

I understand that some Christians think it is symbolic, but don't Catholics believe it actually transforms into the body?? That being said, go ahead and answer.

Most likely gluten. When I was a Catholic, I had no problem taking communion despite the fact that i was also a strict vegetarian.
I understand symbolism. If it was really the body and blood of Christ, don't you think they would be arresting people for cannibalism?

The Communion host "transubstantiates" upon consecration; meaning that the host maintains it's physical properties even after it has changed into the Body of Christ.
Therefore, even after consecration, the host is still very much a wheat-based bread product every bit as much as it is the Body of Christ. That is why some one who is allergic to wheat-based bread products shouldn't consume a Communion host before or after consecration.
Smaller Catholic parishes offer Communion Wine, the Blood of Christ, in addition to the Communion Host. Your friend can receive Jesus through the wine.

hey i think your answers are both correct but if you are talking about the communion being blessed and it becoming the body of Christ. if you really look into that aspect, is not only catholic church that bless communion we also do that too. so for her being allergic to communion, that shows that she is just not interested in any thing about Jesus.

Transubstantiation does not mean that the physical aspects of the bread are changed. it is the ultimate reality of the bread that is changed.
The consecrated hosts, though it is the Body of Christ, still looks, tastes, smells and is chemically identical to an unconsecrated host.

NO, she is not allergic to Jesus. Most likely, she is allergic to WHEAT. The ingredients do not transform into anything other than wheat and water.
I found this article interesting... http://www.livingwithout.com/features/feature-wheatfreeworship.html
I find it ridiculous that the Catholic Church does not allow for wheat (or gluten) - free bread.

It is all symbolic. He could eat a choclate bar and call it the body of Christ. As long as u are eating it for the right reasons. Which is in Memory of Him giving His life for our sins.
