Himei,
Your husband is projecting his male ego onto your dog. You need to tell him to grow up.
Furthermore, your dog is not useless. Yorkies are good dogs. They may not be capable of eating an intruder, but they are certainly capable of hearing one and barking like hell and waking you up, which is what you want to happen anyway.
I personally have 2 big dogs, and I'm crazy about them, and aside from warning me, would not want them in harm's way if someone broke in. I'd prefer to deal with the intruder if need be.
Your dog is also very capable of waking you in the event of a fire.
Here's the thing - if the dog is yours - he is meant to be your companion. If he does that well, and it sounds like he does - then he is fulfilling his purpose very well, and he is doing so by eating far less food, generating less crap, and making smaller messes around the house or yard than a pitbull would - so he's actually a much more efficient dog.
Your husband is probably just trying to 'push your buttons' and making a failed attempt to be funny.
If (IF) he is serious, and has a problem with a small animal simply because it's a small animal - then he's an ignorant and shallow man and you have my sympathies.
Oh - and to answer your question more specifically if it's not clear yet - no I don't hate toy breeds. Some of my favorite dogs have been very small. Some have been big. All dogs, if they are raised with kindness, will love their owner and will be loyal companions and servants, will forgive about anything, and will stay by your side until they die. How could any normal person hate that?

No, not all men hate toy breeds of dog. I had a father in law who was a very 'masculine' truck driver, and he owned a 'minature poodle' that he loved dearly, and it traveled with him everywhere he drove in his truck. The dog was a replacement for a toy poodle that got epilepsy, and had to stay home and take regular medication ... and my husband, who is a very LARGE man raised small dogs, too, when he was younger. We can't have a dog, now, because we live in an apartment, but if we could have dogs, we'd have two ... a small one for my husband and a HUGE one for me ... because I love big dogs as well as small, and that way I could have both, and so could my wonderful man. Tell your husband that he needs to have some 'boy time' with your yorkie ... if he doesn't already, behind your back.

My husband is at work, so I will speak for him. I have always gotten into the herding breeds, and, yes, I thought the toy breeds were kind of useless. One day my husband brought home an abused minpin from down the street-they just gave her to him because they didn't want her. He loved that dog so much, and she was a typical pin-peed in the house, barked at everything, ate the garbage.
Well, one year later, we are the owners of two minpins, one his, one mine, and we foster minpins for a rescue group as well. You should see how defensive he gets over which home gets our fosters.
We are also on the way to having another "foster failure"-another pin who he just can't let go.
I still have my herding dogs, but now they all have something to do. The pins play and the herding dogs herd them. Everyone is happy and has a job to do.
The moral of my story? Don't judge a breed because of what you have heard or seen. Get one yourself and learn the truth.

My husband always liked big dogs cause he said that he never thought that little dogs were for men so he just never got one. Not that he didn't like them he just thought that they was for women. We ended up getting a toy poodle mix and he fell in love with him. When my husband laid on the couch to watch tv Buddy was right there in front of him and if he wasn't my husband was calling him. He played with him all the time. By the way as you and anyone who owns or owned a little dog probably already knows you can still play with little dogs. They play tug a war, you can throw a stuffed animal or stuffed ball and they will fetch it. We used to play a lot of games with Buddy. He got him for me even though he admits when he seen him he thought that he was so cute. He ended up being both his and my baby. He just passed away in Sept. and we were both so heart broken, but yeah he loved him so much and he is now talking about getting another one later. We both still love big dogs just as much. We even own a Doberman. He plays fetch the same way as Buddy did only his throw toys are a lot bigger.

I don't hate them. I've always made the arguement that big dogs are more for sissys because I can take care of myself and don't need a big dog for protection. With a toy dog you're on your own!

I think most men do not like toy breeds because they appear very feminine. When men think of dogs, they usually envision working or sporting breeds, because they are big, masculine and intimidating. I think it just in our nature not to appreciate the toy breed because men are mostly afraid of appearing weak or soft. Now if you see Joan Rivers and Paris Hilton start dragging around a Rottweiler or Pit bull to photo shoots, that impression may change! Hope this helps!

I don't think this is about liking or disliking a little dog. He's being unkind about something you obviously care alot about. We used to have yorkies. Some of them I liked; others I didn't. Either way, I never picked on my wife about them, except to call them ankle nippers as a joke. Is he serious? or just joking? If he's serious, he has very little sensitivity, and that isn't good. I would bet anything he's this way about other things, too, that mean something to you.

I don't I love little dogs, I think they are cute and yeah I enjoy playing with them. I would prefer a German Shepard for my dog, just because they are less hyper and protective. Yet if I had a house dog I think a toy breed of dog is the best.

i know i'm a girl and this is a question for guys, but personally, i hate little dogs. not because they like to be "coddled" and held(i'm a cat person, i like to cuddle), but because they're usually yappy and annoying. on the other hand, my cousin has a Yorkie she's trained to not bark and be excessively hyper. your husband might just be into big dogs(like me) who can play fetch and go on runs with him.
but that doesn't excuse him calling your dog names. tell him to get over it, and perhaps talk about getting him a dog?

Well, he's right the dog is a sissy and is for the most part useless. The dog serves no purpose other than being small, fitting in your hand bag and trying to sit in your curled up arm.
I don't hate them, but if I were to get another dog, it wouldn't be a toy breed.
