Good question. This is where CS Lewis got his idea that animals could talk (Chronicles of Narnia books) before the fall. Neat, huh?

The mythological stories in every religion and holy books are included to convey some good and valuable thoughts. But people take these stories as true and cannot reach the real thought underlying the story. Science has now clearly established that MAN has evolved from apes. The ape species had females and males, so, naturally, females and males of MAN have evolved together. The Biblical story that Male human was created first and the female human was created from his rib is not correct scientifically as well as spiritually.

Being that language hadn't been invented yet, I would say it must have been telepathy or delusion. She must have felt the snake was "talking" to her and it made her feel like not eating the fruit.
How the writer of this biblical story knew about that whole incident will always be a total mystery to me, as it should be to all.

i heard this explanation in a born again fellowship; someone apparently spoke in tongues and some-one else interpreted it.

Back then the serpents, wisest of all the other creatures in Eden were created with legs and Satan posessed one of snakes giving it the power of speech. and because "the snake" tempted Eve to eat the fruit it was cursed to eat the dust of the earth for as long as it lived hence todays snakes slither around on their belly

How would a snake sign without hands?

The snake was Satan, and most likely had the ability to speak. Keep in mind that no one who may answer this can speak from first-hand knowledge, we weren't there.

Anyone who thinks this story actually happened is mentally retarded. Im sorry to be so harsh but come on people....let's get with the "reality" program. This story never happened. It was one cultures interpretation of something they otherwise did not know. Just like we see in countless other cultures.

I doubt it, as it was only invented very recently. I don't think that in any mythology it generally matters HOW something talks, it just does, if it happens to suit the story. If it does matter, it will be explained. Since it isn't, I am guessing it isn't important.

Parables could mean other things. In another case God made a burning bush talk I dont see why a serpent couldnt hear and talk.
