Why would God make deals with Satan? Why would he let Satan completely destroy a mans life just to prove a point? I know what you will say...he was rewarded ten fold at the end and all that...but what sick man would want to lost his wife and children for even a hint of a promise of more later...do you really think Job would have wanted this?

Funny though...I never thought trading my wife for another would feel anything remotely like "double blessed". Especially finding out I lost her because of some sick bet that was going on.

Most people miss the fact that Job's wife did not die. If you read the entire Book of Job you will see that Job lost his children, cattle and other valuables but not his wife. She told him to curse God and die. This was something he refused to do. She was spared so that Job could have more children later.

He never finds out why he lost everything. He gets everything back times two but never knows the reason why God took it all away in the first place. Talk about having 'abandonment' issues.
Also, the original word was satan and it simply meant an adversary. The satan in Job was anti-human, not anti-God. I read to think of it as Gods prosecuting attorney. There's this verse, too...Ezekial 45:7 'I create peace and make evil. I, the Lord, do all these things'.
I think Job's first wife losing all seven of her children at once is beyond cruel. Good thing that twisted deity doesn't exist.
Edit: Oooops. I meant Isaiah instead of Ezekial.

Events that happened at a historical time and in a certain culture must be looked at from that point of view, not from todays.
At that time , if you loose a wife, or loose your kids, you just get another, and make more kids. Loose in those days meant through death: today it means through accident or divorce.
Also, family members, wives, "belonged' to the man. They were his belongings.Job wasn't a "sick" man. What was he giving up? Not much. The Promise of all those "helping hands" later was enough.

Sketch,
I am certain that JOB missed His wife and Children. He had a tender heart and a great love for GOD. I know that Job would not and did not want to trade his family in for another but I am certain that all will be taken care of after the Judgment. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds

Because God knew Job was a "can do man".
And of course he missed his wife...but got rewarded with another one and was doubled blessed.

Sounds like God felt the need to prove something to Satan, doesn't it? What a crazy book.

Personally I don't think God proved a point. I think that Job proved a point. That he would be faithful regardless of what happened to him.

I think Job only lost his children, and his wife lived. And as per the bible his children were rebellious children and there hearts were evil.

long time sense I read it though could be wrong about the wife.

God never makes deal with the devil.

As for Job, i do not think he would have wanted this.
He loves God more than anything and he obeyed God's command. what he has is called faith. it is the same thing you need to better understand the answer.

I think the story of Job is one of the biggest reasons I lost all respect for "God"... That he could do something like that to one of his most loyal followers just to prove a point to satan is totally reprehensible...
