My daughter is 2 1/2 and it seems like she is sleeping too much. She sleeps around 11-12 hours at night and takes a 3-4 hour nap during the day. She is eating and growing normally. But, lately she's also been a bit grumpy.

I am by no means complaining, but I am a bit of worrier. My husband thinks she's just growing. Is this too much sleep?

Thanks for the responses.

I'm glad to read this...I was feeling the same thing about my daughter who is also 2 1/2. She sleeps all the time. I've been told that the more they sleep the smarter they are! Don't know if this is true or not, but my other children didn't sleep like she does, and they don't know half the stuff she does. She knows all the letters in the alphabet and can spell her name (just to name a few things). So I let her sleep and will not let anybody wake her up because they've thought that she's been sleep long enough. She knows when she wants to wake up. I think ur daughter is fine and probably dreaming about all the things that she's processed throughout the day!

I got the following information from the 2 sites below:"According to experts at the Sleep Medicine and Research Center in St. Louis, the current estimates of the sleep needs of children for each 24 hours are as follows:
• One-year-old: 14 hours, including one or two naps
• Two-year-old: 11 to 12 hours at night plus a single, after-lunch nap of one to two hours
• Three-year-old: 12 to 12 1/2 hours "
" The average toddler sleeps around 12 hours a day. But the range extends from just eight hours to nearly 16. How much sleep does your toddler need?
"Your baby's sleep patterns in his first year offer the best clue. Although he needs less sleep as a toddler, your child probably won't increase his up-and-about time by more than about an hour. So if your baby slept 16 hours a day, he'll probably sleep about 14 or 15 hours as a one-year-old. Unfortunately, if your child slept just 10 hours a night as a baby, he won't suddenly need more than that after his first birthday.
"Your one-year-old will probably sleep around 10 to 12 hours at night—but not in a row! It's a rare toddler who sleeps more than six to eight hours at a stretch....Your child will get the other two to four hours of rest he needs by napping during the day. Virtually all toddlers still take at least one nap a day and most take two. Depending on how much your child satisfies his need for sleep at night, his naps may last anywhere from 20 minutes to four hours."

my daughter is about 22 months old and shes sleeping 11-12 hours with 2 hours naps during the day... sometimes 3 hours.. nothing wrong with my daughter.. she eats well and is super active when shes awake.. If your daughter is grumpy lately it might be that there is something else that might be bothering her.. are her molars in yet?... if that persists.. then call the Dr..

my niece was just like that, eventually they go to around 9 hours a night and 2-3 hours nap a day, i think shes just growing. maybe feed her a snack that has a tad more sugar in it, just 1 (gerber graduates has some cookies that are pretty healthy and good for energy and toddlers love them) it might help her be more active and get to a better sleeping schedule. good luck

According to the Sleep Foundation:
"Toddlers need about 12-14 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. When they reach about 18 months of age their naptimes will decrease to once a day lasting about one to three hours."
You should always contact your pediatrician if you are worried.

Hmmm i know that my son would sleep from like 10pm til about 8am and then also take a 2-3hour nap during the day. I think that she's ok but ask your doctor!

She is normal. Children need plenty of sleep. Maybe she needs to get out of the house a bit more. I know my son gets grumpy of we don't get out at least once a day to the park and for walks outside.

Sounds like excessive sleep. I'd be worried enough to get her in for a check up. Insist on some basic labs, just to make sure all is well. The grumpiness could be an indicator. It's hard for a 2 year old to communicate symptoms.

no i feel that is normal. but to distract her from sleeping,or decrease her habit, u can always prepare or have a play time with her. kids like to play dont they?

i mean you can cope with her sleeping habit by doing some educational activities with her (together) during the times when she falls asleep. she is probaly bored and feels that sleeping is the only way? im not sure but i have a feeling that your toddler is bored.
good luck. :)

It's normal. You will get to the point where you will miss the times she slept so much. There are days when I miss it when my son (3 years-old) slept most of the day as a newborn...usually when he is driving me up the wall when he refuses to take his nap!
