Cockateils are smart. But they are not as smart as most of the larger Parrots. Cockateils tend to be ruled by their emotions more than their brains. As such, if they get scared they can and often will fly full speed into a wall trying to get away from the threat!
I have many Cockatiels, and I love them dearly. But they need to be protected because they are really not the brightest of birds.

I would recommend A Quaker parrot if you are looking for a very smart bird, but don't want a really large Parrot! Our Quaker is smarter than some of the humans I know! He is also very affectionate!
Of course, being so smart, don't be surprised if he tries to pull a sneaky on you once in awhile, like taking a bite of your sandwich when you are not looking!
You may want to get your Quaker a Flight Suit from avianfashions.com . These suits look great, come in many styles, and will allow you to safely take your Quaker outside, shopping, visiting, to the bank, to the park, or to special events! We took ours to a local reenactment of the war of 1812 a few weeks ago, and he loved it! The suits keep him from flying away, and even have a disposable diaper to keep him and you from getting soiled with little birdie messes! We even have a Tuxedo suit for him, for formal occasions!

Feel free to E-mail me if you have more questions.

Good luck.

How smart is a cockatiel? It depends on what you're expecting. Do you want them to be smart so they can perform tricks or talk?

I would say my female cockatiel is smart but she doesn't talk or do any tricks but knows exactly what goes on and knows how to get what she wants.

Cockatiels are beautiful birds and I couldn't recommend them enough but perhaps I have been spoilt. Mine is beautiful. My mother's male cockatiel is an idiot.

Females are more affectionate and loving. Males will mimic a lot better. Females can lay eggs (make sure they get enough cuttlefish).

It really depends on what you're after in a bird.

I have a male kakariki who talks non stop. Thank God my female cockatiel doesn't. She does call out if we leave her, though.

Tiels are pretty smart, they usually don't talk, if so a few rods but mostly mimick sounds. Especially whistles and tunes they hear on tv. Although not as intelligent/smart as larger parrots(greys, amazon, cockatoos, macaws) but they are not stupid by any stretch. They are probably as intelligent as about a 2-3 year old while biger parrots are as smart as a 5 year old. They can learn tricks, and love to solve puzzles like this: http://www.theperchstore.net/fm508s.html

I mean I think that just like people it varies bird to bird but about a 2 or 3 year old's intelligence levle is probably a good guess. I say guess because we still don't know for sure yet.

I don't know how to answer you, but they are pretty smart. But not as smart as the bigger parrots. They are approximately as smart as a parakeet (budgie), which is pretty intelligent. They can learn to talk and imitate sounds, but on average aren't as talkative as budgies. They are social birds and they form a bond with those around them, bird or otherwise. This bonding takes a fair while, as befits an intelligent creature. They can open their cage if it's not fastened shut. They learn some communication with you; for instance, they can signal you when they need food or water or want out.
They tend to be more tame and friendly than budgies, on the average, and less aggressive. They move their crest up and down and shake their heads to show their emotions, such as interest and enjoyment. They can learn some tricks, and it is a good idea to teach them at least a command to get on your finger. The usual one is "step up," but mine is "I'm gonna get you," which the birds seem to like better than "step up."

cocatiels aren't very smart. i think cats are smarter. but if you never had a bird, you should choose between cocatiel, budgie/parakeet, and lovebird, because you would not be able to provide a good home to a larger more complex bird. Parakeets are very smart (3rd smartest bird).

I have a cocatiel and my dad has an african grey, which is THE smartest bird. My dad has the grey because i couldn't take care of it -- it was tearing out it's feathers with me because it was too smart to sit alone in the cage while i was at work! Smart means he will cause trouble and wait for you to leave to chew on things! I love my cocatiel. she is so easy to take care of, and very sweet and cuddly. She waits for me to come home and flies around happily, no problems. Just makes a lot of noise when i leave the room or don't open the cage immediatly, but i don't mind that.

cocatiles don't talk, but the male ones will whistle tunes and some people have even taught them to say a word or two. parakeets can be taught to ask for things they want in english, such as "seed" or "water"! lovebirds are the only quiet ones in this group, but they are boring i think because all they wanna do is cuddle, tho i never had one.

I'm each. I've had well instances and dangerous instances. I've discovered how to outlive the streets and the way to outlive the tuition lifestyles. I pick the latter. Believe it or no longer, it is less complicated to be a pupil than it's to be homeless. Being avenue shrewd does no longer imply having typical experience. It way; if you happen to had been dropped within the center of Compton, might you get out with out being shot, robed, or raped?

They are incredibly smart. They good talkers, but they don't mimic tones, just words, and whistle sounds.

I love them to death.
