How can you even think that under powering a sub (or ANY speaker) will cause damage?

Some good reads:

You get the idea.

Clipping, over powering and age are the ONLY three things that cause damage.

Under powering is just too little power much like turning the volume down.

Don't forget poorly designed (or no) enclosures as a cause of damage. Technically you could say "over-powering" still causes the damage in these cases, but a sub in the wrong enclosure often can't handle as much power as a sub in a matched enclosure. (Using a sub in a ported enclosure without a sub-sonic filter can also result in damage).

I understand that completely, but I have a question regarding the clipping using an underpowered amp.

I would assume that the rumor began when an underpowered amp was pushed to clipping and resulted in a damaged sub, but I am curious if clipping an amp that is underpowered can result in a damaged sub? Wouldn't the subs enertia take over the cone, and continue to travel until it lost all enertia to air resistance, my point being that the sub would continue to operate well within it's x max, and the clipping of the amp would have no effect on the physical condition of the sub, rather just the amp and the resulting sound wave, or am I wrong?

so if you turn on your system and put the volume on 15 for an hour coz your talking to someone in the car during a long drive you're damaging your speakers?!? stupid!!!

more reading and less posting is what i suggest for royphil345.

and a whole lot more experience in the field would help as well.

people like Royphil345 are simply passing on bad information they have once been given.
Please people be sure what you answer is factual, or at the very least, preface your answer with "as i understand it...." but dont come off as a expert if you do not know for a fact or it your source is hear say, or from a "buddy". first read, then learn, THEN educate others.
and to the questioners, do not believe a answer in and of itself regardless who gives it, were all wrong fro time to time.
