Well, if you mean ANY type of museum, then i choose the Smithsonian Museums-- they have EVERYTHING! I wish i could go to the new installation next to Dulles...

But since you put this question in paintings, i would say New York's Metropolitan Museum. I love their armory and their period rooms. And the paintings are astounding! Although i never got the chance to see Washington cross the Delaware- ran out of time.

The Frick collection in New York City.

The museum at Rhode Island School of Design.

These are both terrific small museums.

I have a few.
(I pick the museums for the total picture, not just for what's in them)

Louvre in Paris

Amazing entrance with that glass pyramid. Only that is already worth the visit... to France.

Teyler museum, Haarlem the Netherlands

Oldest public museum with many of the rooms in the same state as 2-3 hundred years ago. Very impressive collection in a fitting interior. Very 'time warp'.

Auschwitz — Birkenau

Strange to call this one a favorite. It was a stomach turning experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

The British Museum - I can be there in half-an-hour from where I live, and the variety is endless, particularly good for people-watching!
