Yes, but royal icing dries so hard! Why don't you try buttercream frosting instead.

1/2 cup real butter
1 pound powdered sugar
2 Tablespoons milk
vanilla or almond flavoring to taste

Beat the butter until light. Add sugar slowly, then milk until creamy. Add flavoring, beat in high at least 2 minutes. this will frost a sheet cake or two 8" or 9" layers.

You can buy ready made royal icing or sugar paste icing....the same thing but it has an ingredient that prevents it from turning to rock... in sheets ready to be cut and used. Doesn't cost much more than making it yourself and much easier. I usually use marzipan, although I dislike it, but if you want to do without then spread a little apricot or cherry glaze over the cake first..To make the glaze take three tablespoons of jam and warm it gently in a saucepan until liquid, strain all the bits out and use the glaze before it sets again.

Hi,yes you can do this,i usually put a thick layer of water icing on first to give it a smooth base, let the water icing dry then use the royal icing just as you would on a marzipan base, but if you are using the ready to roll royal icing you don`t even need this ,perhaps use a very thin spread of apricot jam to stop the icing slipping off is about all you may need .

I love marzipan and icing . You can enjoy them even if you don't like the cake (everybody can't make Christmas cake but they can't spoil the marzipan and icing can they?...or can they? 'A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down'! A little cheese goes down nicely with the cake too!

Yes. In the US we don't use marzipan for hardly anything, we just frost the cake straight.

Yeah of course, but i would spread some orange marmalade/ preserve over the chocolate cake before icing - it will help the icing stick and the chocolate and orange combination will be so good!

Sure! Just do it quickly before it starts to harden.

I recommend freezing the cake before frosting it. You can gently brush any crumbs away before frosting. This reduces the amount of crumbs that may get into your icing. Just let thaw after icing and enjoy!

Spread the cake with a thin layer of your favourite jam first.
