Some cats do, and some don't.
If your kitty is happy, consider leaving him where he is: Cats, like humans, are creatures of habit and do not like change.

Yes they do, but it'll take a little time for them to get back into the 'groove'
My sister borrowed one of my cats for company when she went to college (she rented, lived off site) and brought her back 3 years later, she still remembered me. I'd gotten her just before my sister asked about borrowing one and this cat (I was taking in an unwanted one as a favor so she was pretty new) was the one I thought would have the least amount of upheaval problems for that. She was fine with being with my sister during school and was fine when she came back, she adapted well. Plus she remembered me.

I have a great story about that subject. We breed Scottish Fold cats and one of our females (called Graceful Mowser or "Gracie", but her new owners called her "Mouse") went to a friend of ours who wanted to breed the cat. She was at her new home for 1 1/2 years before she had kittens. The momma and kittens were in a large cage and whenever someone wanted to see the kittens she stood over them so you couldn't see them. We were invited to see the kittens and she was hiding them until I said "Hello Gracie" and she looked at me and stood back like she was showing them off. After the kittens were grown, whenever we would visit she would run out to see us, but if it was anybody else she hid. So I have to say that cats DO remember you, particularly if you talk to them alot. Smells can change but your voice doesn't. And cats remember people who are kind to them. They also remember people who are NOT. Smart, aren't they?

Of course he will know. I took care of a dog at the shelter and gave him a lot of attention, and called him baby.My friend adopted him. I go over once in while and he lays on my shoulder like he did when he was a baby.He doesn't do this to any one else. They tried to give him another name but he will only come to baby.

I believe it will. I didn't see my cat for three weeks, and when I came to see him he recognized me. However he seemed angry at me for leaving him for so long, that when I tried to pet him he walked away.
