The Luger pistol in question has an 8-round magazine. Of course, one more round could be loaded in the chamber and yes, a 32 round snail-drum magazine was made for the Luger pistol.
Curley himself leads the lynch mob pursuing Lennie Small after Curley's wife is killed. This from OF MICE & MEN, a novella published in 1937 by John Steinbeck that is considered an American Classic. This trivia would not be fresh in my mind except that the San Diego State University recently had a John Steinbeck celebration and they graciously invited me to participate.
I am impressed with so many here that are not only knowledgeable in weaponry, but familiar with classical literature as well.
Best.

Everyone is correct aboutt he Luger. I believe all German issued Lugers held 8 rounds (I hadn't heard of the 32 round model before...something for me to look into...learn something new everyday)
It has been about 15 years, but I am pretty sure that after Lennie killed Curley's wife, he ran to Larry's house to kill his wife next (OK bad joke)..
Lennie returned to the riverbank where the story began. I believe the reason was that George told him to always return there if he got into trouble.

The Standard magazine for the Luger Model 1908 held 8 rounds of 9 mm Parabellum ammunition.
However, there was a longer barreled Artillery Model that was issued with a 32-round magazine, widely known as a "Snail-drum" magazine.
As for the question about "Of Mice and Men," I have no idea.

The Luger used in Steinbeck's " Of Mice and Men" was a standard issue 8 shot German Luger (P-08) Pistol
The character "George" uses Carlson's ( Luger) to kill Lennie, after Lennie "accidentally" kill's Curley's wife by breaking her neck when she goes into a panic after letting Lennie touch her hair.........
*Geee Thanks Fuzz!
*Those that "thumb down" obviously haven't read Steinbeck's works...........

I've no real idea, I'm just stunned that JD reads something besides Gunsmith books. . .
Personally, I like Steinbeck, much easier read than many of the other "classical" authors. . .
