I was trying to have a baby until three months ago when I had a heart attack caused by a disease I had when I was a child that was passed off as a food allergy until a few months ago. I have little to no damage to my heart and am able to work and exercise as normal. Since the heart attack I have been thinking it may be a better choice for me to choose adoption then try having a baby. Does it disqualify my from adopting since I have had a heart attack? I am single and have been dateing the same man for 18 yrs but will be adopting alone. He does not live in my home either. So I will be the sole care taker.

I also have 2 stents in the artery that was effected.

I'm not 100% sure, but I would guess that it is probably up to the agency or the state depending on their guidelines/regulations regarding adoption. We had to have medical records provided to the agency but I would "think" that it would be illegal to discrimate against someone due to a disability (under disability laws). I would suggest speaking to a local adoption agency to see what their take is on the subject.

My adoptive father had heart problems and was allowed to adopt
He died when I was still a child - it was traumatizing to lose another parent so soon after losing my first family. But, having said that, I can't imagine my life without having known him.

If I were the social worker, I would tell you sadly no based on the stent and the heart attack. I would also question why you've been dating the same man for 18 years and not married.

You should be honest about your health condition. Physically you may not be able to handle a baby. Those who work at the agency want healthy couples who can handle the stress and strains of having a little one.

You will most likely have to disclose your medical condition, but if the reason for the heart attack is taken care of there should be no problem.

When my husband and I did our home study, we had to show our medical records and they made sure we didnt have any health problems. You will have to show your medical records. You need to make sure that you have NO medical problems. I know in Indiana, you cant adopt if you have any major medical problems. So look into and make sure you are in a clean bill of health:)
