.Mark Chapman was a fan of the Beatles, particularly Lennon, but was reportedly angered by Lennon's infamous 1966 remark that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus". Jan Reeves, sister of one of Chapman's best friends, reports that Chapman "seemed really angry toward John Lennon, and he kept saying he could not understand why John Lennon had said it. According to Mark, there should be nobody more popular than the Lord Jesus Christ. He said it was blasphemy. The song "Imagine" also angered Chapman – at prayer meetings and religious rallies, Chapman and his prayer group also sang a parody with the lyric "Imagine, imagine John Lennon is dead."

Mark David Chapman, a Born-Again Xtian, admitted that he was very jealous of the fame of John Lennon but that he heard voices in his head, allegedly from the devil, telling him to murder John.
Thus, religious fanaticism is the root.

I think this was just part of Mark Chapman's psychosis. Many people who are paranoid &/or jealous get caught up in religious delusions. He may even have had grandiose thinking that he was more important than Lennon or the right arm of Jesus...fulfilling his psychotic thinking.

Sorry if my answer isn't very spiritual.

Mr. Chapman was a very mentally ill man... which included religious delusions... but the mental illness was the primary problem. You should look up the forensics on him, they are fascinating, and show how much we lose for not providing basic affordable mental health care.

It has been proved time and time again that Chapman is a megalomaniac who thinks he's Lennon (or like him, but there could be only one); he even tried to live like him (finding his own 'Yoko', too), prior to the murder.

if your information is true, than i guess it didn't stop him. your link is wikipedia- not the most reliable source. i was actually just discussing lennons death this evening. it was such a tragic event, imagine what he could of done in the rest of his life.....

i also heard that lennon was murdered because his murderer (being insane) wanted to impress a movie star.

Not religious fanaticism in general, but the fanaticism of one man who's mind was not quite right.

He was mentally ill... (not of sound mind, not due to religious fanaticism)
but of course religion is responsible for all bad things ( it works for alot of people... read on).
